KUMATZ

July 18, 2007 4:29 PM

This is a collaboration with the great micayetoca and an attempt to recreate what one might hear from the pre-columbian Maya. (snake)

I did the recorder as flute with some light percussion while micayetoca laid down the vox and great percussion. Kumatz is "snake" in the Quiche language most spoken by the Maya.

Lyrics:

Tatb'exïk.
Je'l utatajik ri täq b'ix.
We katutya' jun arajil kumätz katkamik.
We katutya' jun arajil kumätz katkamik.

Listen
It is nice listening to songs
but if you are ever bitten
by that snake called money, you die
If you are ever bitten
by that snake called money, you die.

Thanks, micayetoca!

Don't know what the protocol is as to commenting on songs you've been invited to collaborate in, but I wanted to say it was really cool to have been asked to participate in it, and snsranch completely surprised me with the track he sent.

I'm really glad you asked, man.

((I couldn't really hear the lyrics over the music. Is this a feature of the piece?))

I'll tell you what the protocol is - do it!

Yet another example of why MeFi music is so cool (as well as the challenge). Thanks, guys.
