Navelgazer and I are in a Brooklyn-based indie-rock band called The Olivers. This past weekend, we recorded 7 songs for our new album. This one is called The Marching Glum. Please let us know what you think - we are curious as to how people will like our new material.
This song has a bit of a story behind it, but I think I'll let Navelgazer drop in and tell it himself.

Not a long story. This was the first song I wrote when I got my first guitar when I was fifteen. The musical structure has always remained the same, but I've rewritten the lyrics to sort of poke fun at my fifteen-year-old self. That's it.

Hey guys, this is pretty powered up and I like it a lot. Sound like a lot of fun to play too.

The Olivers myspace thingy.

Any chance of you guys posting a live version of any of your songs? It would be a blast to hear you guys in action in front of a crowd.

Oooh, that's a good idea.

We have a gig coming up next Tuesday at Niagara. Perhaps we could arrange a taping of some sort...

Great stuff. Lots of energy, obviously. Did y'all record all or part of this "live" (e.g., drums and guitars at the same time in the same room)? I may be way off, but I think I can hear the room sound of the guitar/bass strings playing, and that, coupled with the palpable energy, makes me suspect it. I only ask as somebody interested in different recording techniques, especially live ones, looking for another data point.

erikgrande:

We had the Drums and Bass in one room, and the guitars in a booth together. Then I overdubbed the vocals.

Naw, recorded it in the studio.

However, I think that you're onto something about how the amount of energy in the song gives it sort of a live feel.

Hopefully, Navelgazer will pop back in - he could do a better job then I of discussing the technical details of the recording.

Thanks. I interpret Navelgazer's comment to mean that both rooms were recorded at the same time. In my book I call that a qualified "live", but, regardless, it sounds great. I hope you post details on the album when it comes out, and, if you tour, please consider Dallas, which has many venues, like the Cavern , which are most hospitable.

That's a lot of commas.
