KILLBOT: DESTROY! (sh!t mix)

July 1, 2008 1:44 PM

A song for the killer robots to march to, mixed haphazardly

This is the first time I tried my hand at properly mixing everything and getting all the tracks to fit together, and wow, is it really hard. I am not very happy with this mix of the song but I don't know how to fix anything. The biggest problem is that I can never get the low end to clear up; it always sounds muddy and boomy. I can't figure out how to get the bass, kick, and the other instruments to all fit together. I've tried cutting frequencies to make room, but its just not working how I want it to. Can any of the more experienced offer some tips and suggestions about mixing, both in regards to this song and for mixing in general?

Some more things:
I can't get the bass line to come through clearly, which is related to the general low end problem I'm having, and I also can't get the kick to pierce through the mix, and same with the snare.

I wish I had some advice for you, but I really just use trial and error with EQ to de-muddy tracks when necessary. I don't have any specific go-to tips...

That said, I didn't think you did too badly here. The bass drum overpowers the bassline a little, but not to an unreasonable degree. I'm listening on headphones, though, so maybe the problem is exacerbated on speakers.
