Urban Pleasure

A song about being young and living in the city and trying to stay sane.

There are a lot of young things in the big city that can distract a young man from the hustle. Sometimes those things are good, sometimes they're bad.

My friend Henning Thomsen helped out on drums.

I don't know man. The city ain't so bad. Maybe try moving to a different neighborhood? Kind of an Alice in Chains thing going on. I kind of like the droning outro part. I know its kind of weak to be critical and such but the lyrics come off as a little bit contrived to me.

I can sort of understand where dobie is coming from. For me, there's a bit of cognitive dissonance between the lyrics and the clean recording -- it's very well done, but I'm not sure it suits this song, exactly. I find myself wanting the vocals to have more of an edge, the guitars to have a bit more distortion, the drums to be a bit more pulse-pounding. It's the same reaction I get when listening to a band that's clearly talented, but really shines when performing live. I bet with the energy of a live performance, everything would come together very nicely.

Anyway, recording niggles aside, this is a cool song! I like your style.

I really like the chorus. I think it's the second voice. The chorus is the best part.

Maybe try moving to a different neighborhood?

I did. Different country in fact. It is a reflection on my expereince living on Chicago's Westside.
Where I live now, there is a brothel two doors down and when I walk down my street there is a junkie always hassling me for change.

...the lyrics come off as a little bit contrived to me.
I was wary of that when I wrote it but that's how it was/is. Life isn't always happy and shiny.
