Diamond Joe

Low quality stomping country music recorded drunk and presented here in it's straight-from-the-desk unmixed format. Came out pretty good. Nice rattly drums.

Heh it sounds drunk (but in a good way!)

Great song, and the recording sounds real nice 'n' visceral.
posted by MetaMonkey at 7:46 AM on June 30, 2006

Should have added: This is a song that is around about 200 years old and so should be considered trad.arr. I've heard Dylan and Gillian Welch do versions.

I'm particulalry fond of the yodelling at the end. :)

Hehe, drunktry music! You guys probably put on a good show.

One of my favorite Rejected Tracks from meficomp. Well done, sir.

Cortex: It's the way you capitalize the R and T that makes me know you love it. :)

I thought it was only rejected from the MeFi Comp album for want of a better quality recording? Anyway, I love this song.

Good Stuff, Jofus.

mullacc: more or less, yes. Get's my foot going every goddam time, but there was no uncompressed master available and turtlegirl was going crazy trying to make the mix work.
posted by cortex at 9:17 AM on June 30, 2006

I had a conversation with Matt - the guy who owned all the recording equipment and is on backing vocals and lead guitar here. It went:
"I need a lossless version of the mix"
"There was no mix. We burned live to CD"
"Well we need a wav of a mix"
"What's a wav?"
"It's a lossless version of the mix"
"What's a lossless?"
"An uncompressed version"
"Oh. An MP3"
"No...Ah forget it..."

Jofus, I'm not a big fan of country cuz it lacks what this song has. A little shit-kickin, a little old-timey and played with soul. I love it!
posted by snsranch at 5:15 PM on June 30, 2006

I think it sounds great. It's an audio party. I mean, it just has so much energy. Very cool.

Is this too Irish to be country? Or too country to be Irish? I can't decide.

Either way it's frickin' awesome. Bravo.

I am currently drinking, and I am very much in support of this song.

The mix of everything reminds me of Calexico. Which is a good thing.

We always referred to it simply as "Low Quality Bluegrass"

Only from mefi would I consider listening to something like this. Amazed that I kinda might like it.

This song had me dancing around like Ally Sheedy! Do y'all play somewhere or what?

That yodel killed me.

Good God, I love this-- the lyrics, the harmonies, the brilliantly rough production quality. Thanks, Jofus!

Thanks Muddgirl. I find that with yodelling, enthusiasm always makes up for a lack of talent. :)

This song is the very reason why I need to come to Metafilter Music more frequently. A very nicely executed song that had me tappin' mah feet along to a happy beat. Well done Jofus!

I've just stumbled on this now, if you can believe that.
Really great.

Wow, really good. More please. I've most certainly consumed enough alcohol to enjoy this gem properly (don't mind the timestamp).

Four years later, this song still pretty much kicks all sorts of ass.

Still one of my favorites. I'm actually using this one in class tomorrow over the Dylan, et al, versions.

You guys it's been almost 10 years and I'm still listening to this song. It's worked its way up to one of my all-time favorites, in fact. Thanks, Jofus, for a decade of instant on-demand happiness.

Same for me - heavy rotation in my iTunes. It's a terrific song. I wish there were more like this to hear!
