SkyMall (Jonathan Coulton cover)

July 22, 2008 12:12 AM

A few months ago I decided I wanted to try and do a cover. Based on the result, it was clearly a bad idea. I probably should have been discouraged but instead, after months of therapy, I decided to try again. The victim this time was one of my favorite artists - Jonathan Coulton and his excellent song SkyMall.

The first few moments of the original have a very sweet quality. For this version I decided to try and extend that quality to the entire song by encasing it in a thick layer of vanilla frosting. Hopefully the result is something you’ll enjoy.

i hadn't heard the original before, and now that I have, it will always sound like it's missing your awesome piano. Also, your version is a little more cheeky and precious than the original, which I think fits the lyrics.

Very nice job! Coulton's version always sounded triumphant to me, but this is a much more pensive SkyMall.

Overall I'd have to say I prefer the original because the cover feels a bit flat dynamically -- for my ear, it's a long time to maintain that vanilla-sweet feel of the introduction. On the other hand, I much prefer your organ solo to his guitar solo.

@DanB: I agree with your assesment... i do feel it's a bit flatter than i'd hoped. I worked hard to try and fix that but I think i ran out of steam at some point. Though I do think the solo and added guitar in the third verse pick it up a bit. If i were to tweak, i'd focus on the second verse/chorus combo.
