This trip is a bit more relaxed.

I had a good time with this after the ideas started to take shape.

bass
mbira
percussion (tom, hat, quaker oats can, mini bongos and congas, and muted cymbal)
6 and 12 string guitar
some synth drone
organ

oooooh, neat! Super cool beat! This is really well produced, I like the way you panned the percussion. The guitars in your B section are pretty deadly as well.

Truly great, dagosto. I wasn't expecting such a "full" sound and it caught me from the beginning. You deserve special credit for the way the organ is used, everything is perfect, but the restrain necessary to play only one "twang" with one of the instruments is commendable. Great version.

Yeah, a lot of restraint was exercised during recording. I got rid of several tracks that had more notes before finding the sound I was after. Thanks

Appropriately sleazy... I like the drone thing (what's is that?) but it could have been louder. Vocal too. Minor quibbles. This has a real 60's feel - reminds me of the Doors if they'd had a pop at this one. Fab baby!

I'm glad you didn't boost the vocals any more than you did. It fits the style beautiful. It's like the Zombies' 60s proto-psychedelia meets a little bit of Santana (mainly because of the perc).

micayetoca - that was probably an unconstructive way to respond to that comment.

Vocal level, for me is a complete matter of taste. The general belief among the pros is it absolutely needs to be well out in front. I totally see why and often mix like that. For a lot of my own stuff (as well as a lot of the more "indie" stuff I produce) I approach the mix from a different aesthetic and end up treating the vocals a bit more like a texture. I think that this preference comes from emulating the sound of a live show where the backline is overpowering the front of house system, which is par for the course in a place that will feature unsigned acts.

MajorDundee - I still take that critique to heart. It is a very fine line between being too quiet and just right. The mixes you are turning out are fantastic. So definite point taken.

I liked that quote. I read it with a John Wayne voice.

This is really fantastic. Yes, it has a bit of the playful Les Baxter, tiki room thing, but not too much. At it's heart, it still retains some darkness.
