Oboe d'amore is a gorgeous instrument *and* a funny name to boot (which I'm pretty sure comes from its Moorish roots and not from its love powers.)

Robbie Hunsinger played the d'amore on this track and she tells me she bought the instrument to play Bach. You can hear her do just that on broadcasts of Chicago Symphony Orchestra's "Christmas Oratorio."
