A Little More Jimi Can't Hurt

Old, and maybe worn out, but I'm still very inspired by this star-child hammering it out on 12 string acoustic. It wasn't a gimmick, Jimi. We're STILL learning from you.

Yup. For me, when it gets right down to it, Jimi will always be the boss. No-one's come even close. His technique wasn't conventionally great, his voice wasn't top-drawer and, arguably, his songwriting was sometimes a bit perfunctory. But, man, he had fire and soul and verve and inventiveness that would smoke anyone then and now. I still find this utterly inspirational.

SRV's Life by the Drop is a bitersweet bookend to this.

I still find this utterly inspirational.

Holy shit. I had no idea that show was filmed. Any ideas about where to obtain better quality/the whole thing?

That solo on Machine Gun stands as one of the greatest pieces of artistry ever created by electric guitar. He just becomes one with the thing.

I didn't now it existed either until I just took a random shot at YouTube looking for an audio clip to post here. Amazing.

The correct answer to the question:

Beatles or Rolling Stones?

is

motown/r&b

i say that as someone who was 10 years old in 1967 - oh, the beatles and sgt pepper and strawberry fields were just mind blowing - and the stones were just hard and great - but nothing got to me the way that stevie wonder's "i was made to love her", or the supremes' "reflections", or marvin gaye and tammy terrell's "ain't no mountain high enough" did - and then there's aretha franklin, ike and tina turner, otis redding, bretton wood, jay and the techniques ... too many to list

that's the music that got me into music, even though i've gotten into and followed many other things as a musician

this should not be taken as a disparagement of jimi's totally god-like and awesome guitar skills - although i have to say that jamie jamerson was his equal on bass

but 60s r&b and even schocky 60s pop (i even like richard harris and the association) will always be IT for me
