I Don't Know Anything About These ToysDJ

Looking for Christmas present advice for the family DJ/producer/whatever the hell he actually is.

First, a few select tracks so we know what we're playing with. Elation & Confusion (& a little Temptation), In That Grey Area, and That Thing (This Or). And a torrent of stuff that I think is better quality.

Alright, now that that's out of the way, I need to get the guy a Christmas present. I've got roughly $100 to spend.

He already has a keyboard (which my art school for violin wife is jealous of so I'm assuming it's a good one), drums, and bass. And the skills to use them well enough. Drums are easily his best, keyboard and bass are good enough for what he's doing right now.

I went to Guitar Center yesterday to look at what was available. Other than some better programs than Audacity, which are out of my price range, I have no idea where to go.

The guy helping me out listened to bits of that torrented album and threw out a couple ideas.

1) Set of plugins (?) that could be used with Audacity that would add a bunch of other instruments.

So far my brother has either been playing an instrument himself or pulling samples from songs. I can really see the benefit of being able to virtually play something if you can't get it out of the song right or want something that you can't play yourself and can't find a sample of.

2) Portable reorder that does audio and video that he (the guy at the store) acted like he really wanted.

Again, I can see the benefit of being able to record real world sounds to be used later. Or even recording other people's rap stuff somewhere other than his bed room and being able to work with it later.

Needless to say, this is not my area at all. Partly because of that I'm going to be talking to my brother so he ends up with something that he'll actually use.

So what kind of thing would you suggest? What would you want in his situation?

I'll be around to answer questions.

The electronics route may not be the best because you know so little about what he uses. I can't tell from your question whether he has the capability to record live audio or not.

So maybe you could give him several small percussion instruments: shakers, triangle, cowbell... on and on. As a drummer, I suspect he'll find some use for these things- and you could get several for $100. Also, find out what drumsticks he likes and get him some of those.

Sorry, he has a mic. I want to say a condenser, but I'm not sure.
