"The Remainders"

January 31, 2011 4:13 PM

The Remainders are me (odd man from the original drawing) and anyone who found out late about the challenge. Details...

chrchr did the drums and the basis for the bass.

I did the bass.

ignignokt did keyboards and

g.i.r. did the guitar as well as the intro and outro.

We would have done more and there were two other fellows inline to participate, but the time constraint was pretty tough for us late starters. We have another variation done in E-fUNK coming out tomorrow. Enjoy!

Beautiful. The kind of track I would hang around and have another drink to keep listening to.

this was a lot of fun !

the first thing i got to hear was the drums and bass. real cool groove...i figured i had a handle on an idea for it, but then i heard the keys...and i wasn't sure what to do. that's not a slam on ignignokt in any way - just that the drums and bass alone moved me in one specific direction and the mix with the keys added kind of threw me for a loop :) but i really immersed myself in listening to where ignignokt was coming from, and hopefully added something that was complementary.

i hope to do this kind of thing again sometime soon. collaborating with these guys, great musicians all, pushed me into new territory, and it was pretty exciting and rewarding !

...and the other collaboration tracks for the challenge are great too !

Yeah, I wasn't really sure how much to fill. In retrospect, I should have left more space. Thanks for reaching that extra foot, there!

After hearing the funk/soul version of this I'd say ignignokt's keys took this in a pretty cool psychedelic acid-jam direction that I really like. This collaboration thing was pretty awesome, the results have been particularly fantastic even by Metafilter Music Monthly Challenge standards.

ignignokt, you should have no regrets...that was a great keyboard part. it was just that i couldn't wrap my head around it at first...for me, it was like it came from outer space or somethin'. :)
so i laid the funky stuff down first, because i needed to get that out of my system...and then i worked on the version with your keys. it was great because it really took me out of my little box...i listened really intently and tried to put myself in your headspace, jammed along with it a bunch of times until i thought i had something worth contributing, and put it down. the funk version was fun - - the 'chilly' version is so much more...
...just great fun all around !
