I Used To Hate You But Now I Love You

June 29, 2011 9:21 PM

This month's Challenge got me to thinking: with 'hate' being such a profound and powerful emotion, isn't it odd that there are really so few songs that really employ it as an idea or as inspiration? I mean, 'love'? Heck, you can't spit without hitting a love song, but hate, that's a different story. So anyway, this is a song of hate and love. Love and hate. Simple as that. Video here.

Recorded live at Nardis in Kashiwa, Chiba, Japan, on June 28, 2011. Smoke Benders: Samm Bennett (vocal & diddley bow), Daysuke Takaoka (tuba) and Naoya Numa (drums).

I USED TO HATE YOU BUT NOW I LOVE YOU

i used to hate you baby it's true
it was mostly for the things you wouldn't do
you wouldn't give me the time of day
or even acknowledge I was alive in any way

i used to hate you baby, it's true
but now i love you, i love you, yes i do

used to wake up hating every morning
and go to bed just a-hating every night
i hated here and there, i hated back and forth
up and down and left and right

i used to hate you baby, it's true
but now i love you, i love you, yes i do

why'd i start loving you honey
there were several reasons i guess
it started that night
you showed up at my door
wearing that little silk dress
yes yes yes

and now i'm crazy, crazy 'bout you baby
hard to believe it wasn't always so
that old time hatred has melted away
like the spring melts away thye winter snow

i used to hate you baby, it's true
but now i love you, i love you, yes i do

Oh man Naoya's tiny tiny little cymbal is hilarious.

I like that one-note ponderous trudge.

You're really belting in this one.

The look of hate
Is in your eyes
A look your smile can't disguise
The look of hate
It's saying so much more
Than just words could ever say
And what my heart has heard
Well it takes my breath away

I can hardly wait to hold you
Feel my arms around you
How long I have waited.....
