Ouroboros

Carbon 7 again -- This was the opening salvo at our Solstice show last month. 10 minutes-worth of us making it up as we go. Recorded live at the Carousel Lounge.

We decided to come right out of the gates all at once this time, so there's not the usual slow build-up. I named the song for the sinewy, circular bass line I turned into the theme. This was also my first outing with my new cheapo analog echo (I turn it off after a couple minutes).

I'm finally getting to the point where I don't feel like I need to make excuses for the mix -- learning stuff about mic placement that's helped a ton with the drums. Considering I set up to record in 30 minutes flat & did this with 5 mics, 1 line-in, a FW interface & a MacBook, I'm actually ecstatic with the results.

This sounds great - full range, no mud, distinct separation. Awesome!

I like the performance, too.

Every time I hear your tracks I think "Man, I wish I could play guitar in a band like this!"

It's honestly the most satisfying thing I've ever done.

Great recording! Drums sound awesome. How did you mic them? How big is this club? Sounds like a studio recording.

It was a really small club -- we were set up directly on the wood dance floor, & it's got a tile ceiling no more than 10 ft. high & cinder block walls. Live-ish, but not too live. I added a lot of reverb in Logic -- my stereo-ification trick is to send the drums to two verbs -- a short, brightish room verb panned slightly left & a long dark hall, panned slightly right. I only used 3 mics -- a Shure sm 81 as an OH pointed straight down at the gap between the snare & the rack tom only about 30 inches up, a 58 right up on the floor tom & an AKG D 112 about 6 inches out in front of the kick drum.
