The Great Request Raffle

The Great Request Raffle: take up the challenge!

I am excited to announce that the new Music Challenge will shortly be launched: the Great Song Request Raffle, as suggested by Jessamyn and fine-tuned (lulz) as a concept by some of us MeFiMufites.

When the challenge launches we'll start getting requests in, so roll up, roll up - if you think you can take on the challenge of fulfilling someone's wish, please comment here, memail me or email MeFiRequestRaffle@outlook.com!

The Rules:
- First rule of request raffle is always talk about request raffle. The more requests we get and the more people take them up, the more fun it will be.
- The deadline for submissions is November 1st
- You can take on more than one request, but not simultaneously - ie. once you finish one, you can request another
- If you get a request that you don't think you can fulfil, it's ok to send it back and get a different one.

This is my first time curating a challenge so if anyone has any comments or suggestions then let me know!

This post doesn't appear to explain what "the Great Song Request Raffle" is.
posted by Wolfdog at 7:18 AM on August 30, 2013 [1 favorite]

Oh dear sorry - a bit more explanation might be good. Here's how it works:

1. Requests are sent in by MeFites (musician or not), for a song or piece of music to their specification, eg. a cover of a song they love, an accompaniment to some words they wrote, a song about a particular thing.

2. Requests are distributed by those who have said they want to take up the challenge - they then create the requested item in whatever way they choose, and post it on the Music board

3. General laudation and profuse hugs
posted by greenish at 7:34 AM on August 30, 2013

I like the idea quite a bit, but there might need to be some sort of mechanism for accepting the challenge. Like, what if the raffle serves you up something that you're just not capable of for some reason? Say a song with a really weird time signature when you're stuck to a limited pool of canned drum beats?
posted by COBRA! at 9:33 AM on August 30, 2013

Feels like we could handle that with the sort of unspoken Axiom Of Flexibility that I feel governs Music Challenge stuff in general: if something just won't work / isn't work, say so and we'll nudge it until it does. The value in constraints is a big part of why I think these things are great, but we don't have to be hardcore about it just for the sake of the purity of the thing or whatever, it's ultimately about making some music and having fun.
posted by cortex at 9:37 AM on August 30, 2013

Fair enough. The more I think about it, my hypothetical was really about a man curled up on the floor with a broken guitar and an empty bottle of Two Gingers internally castigating himself for Having Let Someone Down Musically and that's not really a problem you fix with a formal policy.

Is there going to be a MeTa and\or a sidebar thing about this? (Presumably post holiday) I think that's the way to get requests.
posted by Gygesringtone at 11:35 AM on August 30, 2013

Yeah, I think that'd make sense. Maybe I'll put the challenge up on Tuesday and then we can have a metatalk and a sidebar for it to let the larger mefi crowd know what's going down.

Ooh! This sounds fun and potentially fulfilling! I'll toss my hat into the ring, as a solo artist and that of the collective group, so feel free to call upon us for anything you can or can't wrap your heads 'round.

Also, I'm sorry to report that our go at Soul Love fell through, time-wise. We've spent so much time finishing OK, Computer? that we had 2 sessions left to do the Bowie track, one of which fell through because I was sleep deprived, and Kerry had a conflicting gig. Hopefully we'll get a belated post of it in the coming week or two.

In general, would it be possible to steer away from the challenges that focus on a single album by a single artist? OK Computer and Ziggy are phenomenal albums--I am looking forward to a slow day at work today to give a listen to the September entries--but I think it would be nice with the challenges to give a bit more freedom of choice, and a bit more variation (though all the results are so different). "Choose from these 12-15 songs to play" can be great, but not every time.

Favorite song when you were 18? Favorite song by an artist from your city/state/province/fiefdom/city-state? Song from your birth year?

But definitely count me in. I am doing this one finally. Oh yes.

In general, would it be possible to steer away from the challenges that focus on a single album by a single artist?

Well *in general* we have steered away from and do steer away from those kinds of Challenges. The Mefi Music Challenge happens once a month, and has been going for several years now. The "let's do this particular album" challenge has only happened two or three times, among more than 60 Challenges.

Favorite song by an artist from your city/state/province/fiefdom/city-state?

I like that one! Pretty sure mine would be a Hank Williams tune (born in Alabama) although Sonny Blount (better known as Sun Ra) was born in my hometown of Birmingham, putting him even closer. I think I'd submit two songs, then, for that particular Challenge. File that one for future reference, greenish!

Song from your birth year?

We did one for the song that was #1 on the day you were born. Back in 2010.

When I was around 16, me and my chums were in various bands and, whenever any discussion about what a song should be called came up, our default name was always "My Arse Is So Hairy I Can't Shit."

I have literally no idea why.

This policy was gradually extended to include any song whose name you couldn't quite remember; any song whose name you couldn't be bothered to remember; any song that you thought might be improved by having such a name and, finally, to literally any song.

Long story short, I always kind of wondered what a song called "My Arse Is So Hairy I Can't Shit" might sound like.

Actually, no I didn't. Please feel free to ignore this suggestion entirely. Also, cortex, please ban me from participating further in this discussion.

How exciting! Lots of new requests and challengers due to the podcast. I'll try and get them all sent out asap.

Points to answer:

- no there is no money involved! unless you count the currency of high fives, in which case you can expect bountiful riches should you fulfill a request
- November 1st is the deadline for submission of completed recordings. If I keep getting requests right up to it, we might keep the challenge rolling in the background if people want it to.
- In order to either make a request or receive one, just use the email address above or memail me.

Also one last thing - if you've said you want to take part but can't promise a speedy response, I'm leaving you til last in order to make sure that requests are fulfilled before the deadline if possible. If your circumstances have changed, and you'd be able to do it by the deadline now, just let me know and I'll shunt you up the priority list!

Well being just talented enough to play the eight track, I'll put in a request:

An electro-acid-punk version of Liebeslieder Waltzes 11

No. 11
Nein, es ist nicht auszukommen
mit den Leuten;
Alles wissen sie so giftig
auszudeuten.
Bin ich heiter, hegen soll ich

bin ich still, so heißts, ich wäre
irr aus Liebe.

No, there’s just no dealing
with people;
they manage to put such an evil
interpretation on everything.
If I’m jolly, they say I harbor
wayward lusts;
if I’m calm, the story is I’m

Do you know the version by the Leslie Spit Tree'o, I believe they are (were?) called? Not exactly punk rock, but a great, great cover.

Me, I'd like to hear some kind of cowboy ballad or something about MefightClub, heavily featuring the legend of rotato. This is not a serious request.

By the way, I'm doing a bit of listening to back catalogues here and there to make sure no-one gets a request that they might not be able to physically or technically accomplish, and wow, there are some real gems out there. You talented beasts.

All hail Toronto! The Tree'o were alt-country before alt-country was cool, back in my student days in TO. So called because they lived on a filled part of Lake Ontario called the Leslie Spit.

Submitted a request, but it's pretty offbeat. Hoping somebody rises to the task.

How many requestors and requestees are there so far?

Mmmmmm stats.

THE STORY SO FAR

- I have received 59 requests as of this morning

- 49 challengers (including me) have taken up a request

- Three have been three submitted (you can see them on the Music front page and also here)

- There have been three people who asked to change because the one they got first wasn't possible for some reason.

- Requests are still coming in at about 1-2 per week

- There are currently 10 requests unallocated (although dubold might take on one of the most beastly difficult ones), which can be taken up by challengers who have completed one already, or who are drawing blanks on how to fulfil the one they've been given and want to swap.
