Dark Patterns

July 1, 2014 7:35 PM

This is a free internet single from the new album my wife Lori and I are working on as Tangemeenie. It was inspired by a discussion I found here on MetaFilter. Lyrics under the fold.

Lately I can't clear my mind of dark patterns
Always seeing people making their moves in the shadows
Suspicion's hanging in the air like the sounds of crowd chatter
I'm trying to find a way to rule out signs that don't matter
(Here comes one now...)

I was born under an unlucky star, you know
I never really thought I would make it this far
(Did you know?)

I was born under an unlucky star, you know
I never really thought I would make it this far
(This far? Honey, I'm a goner.)

I've been seeing dark patterns.
Now they're gone.

When the light finally breaks it comes on so sudden
Chasing all the hungry rats out of their cupboards
Now there's nothing left for us but a life of summer
Endless breezy days and an end to our troubles
(Do you believe me now?)

I was born under an unlucky star, you know
I never really thought I would make it this far
(Did you know?)

I was born under an unlucky star, you know
I never really thought I would make it this far
(This far? Honey, raise the bar)

I was seeing dark patterns.
Now they're gone.

This is very well put together. Nice and crisp production, and there is a precision to how everything is played. A fun listen, too -- it's complex and layered, but still catchy. Good job!

wow. That is very well done. When is the album out? I would totally buy an album of stuff like this. It reminds me of a lot of different influences but mostly it just feels like it has it's own thing going on that really works well.

It will be out if all goes to plan late this year. We're planning a Kickstarter to launch the new album and to release an eBook that completes the work we began with our first album over a decade ago...

yeah. those two rhythm guitar parts bouncing off each other and interlocking are incredible. The bit on the left side in particular is making my brain wonder and hurt at the same time. Good stuff!

Wow. This is great. I have such a weakness for trebly, cleanish interlocking guitars. And I really like how the ticka-ticka drum machine part works with them.

This is ace, love the guitars. I wish I could hear more of Lori's voice though!

She'll be singing lead on the next (not necessarily coming soon) single; didn't make sense for her to take lead duty on this one because there's a sort of semi-autobiographical component to the lyrical content we both felt made it make more sense for my vocals to be lead on this cut. There are a couple of little edits that will probably still make it on the final album version, and in the final mix, all the vocals may be mixed a smidge (or even two) louder... Thanks for the feedback.

This is great: bouncy without being twee. Seconding greenish on Lori's voice; I find myself straining to hear it, and missing other parts of the song.

We've since done a remix of this, and I think it turned out much better. I'd share it here, but don't want to hog the main page with a remix... It's on our Soundcloud page. MeMail me and I'll send you a link, or you can search for it there.
