Esme

A song written for my 4 month old daughter.

I have been away from Mefi for awhile, adapting to my role as a new father. No matter how much people tell you that becoming a parent is life-changing, it only hit me after the birth of my little girl. The joy of being with her and the feeling of helplessness that I will not always be able to shield her from pain manifested itself in this song. She gave me a big grin when I played it for her, so I guess it's good enough for her!

Oh dear Esme, you’ve only seen this world less than half a year
But already I love you more. Than you’ll ever love yourself
Oh dear Esme, you have your mother’s prudence, and your father’s song to keep
You safe from the stormy winds and all troubles that may come your way

All the photographs that will be yours to keep, with me only as reflections in your eyes
To show all the world the endearment you own. Belonging to no one else.
And dear Esme, do you remember how you wanted to run before you could sit
And smiled on your first moon. Gazing deeper than the dark of night.

Oh dear Esme, you’ve only seen this world less than half a year
But already I love you more. Than you’ll ever love yourself.

This is lovely, she'll treasure it when she's older!
