A Spot of Blue

February 28, 2021 1:47 PM

I bought a new USB microphone, and this is the first song I've recorded with it. Feels lovely to not record onto my phone.

For those keeping score, this is the song I was writing when I stumbled upon the melody to Lucky by Britney Spears, posted here.

Ooo0o00ooOoOOoo

Like a river runs
into a ravine,
When I call your name
what is the sound in between?

I can see a spot of blue.

I wish I knew now
what I knew then.

I can see a spot blue.
I wish that I knew.

Dang son this sounds nice, and very well-written. (What did I expect, drek?) Enjoy that new mic!

Feels like a view of the rain through a window kind of song to me. Sounds great.

Thank you all so much for the nice compliments! The mic is a Blue Yeti Nano. In retrospect it's not THAT nice and maybe I should have splurged a bit more, but it'll get the job done for these little demos.

How lovely. I want to pack this into a rucksack, leave it til the weather gets warm, and take it up to Dartmoor on a sunny day.

Very sweet song - loved it. As a bit of a production nerd my immediate reaction was "this would sound even better if it were recorded properly". But, you know, I'm not so sure about that on reflection. Lo-fi recordings have a charm all their own - a certain intimacy and not-trying-too-hard quality - that sometimes would be ruined by trying to "improve" things. Magic has to be captured where it's found.....
