If I Should Fall In Love Again

Once bitten....

If I Should Fall In Love Again

My daddy said to me
It’s a lottery
And there’s nothing free
Just you wait and see

Call it logical
Call it cynical
What I’m telling you
Something’s ringing true

If I should fall in love again
I’d look before I jump that train
I wouldn’t swap the sun for rain
If I should fall in love again

And I’d make sure to keep my friends
If I should fall in love again
I’d never let them drift away
I’d save them for that rainy day

It’s all been said before
And we don’t need no more
Tired old cliched lines
Little crooked rhymes

All the hip hooray
All the fine bouree
All the agony
All the ecstacy

This amnesia, it infects us all
There’s a bugle call and we start to fall
How we soon forget the hollowing
As we see our dreams
disappearing...

If I should fall in love I’d be
Smarter than I used to be
I wouldn’t wear it on my sleeve
If I should fall in love I’d be.....

....guarded and mysterious
I wouldn’t take it all on trust
If I should fall in love i’d just
Hold some back for when it’s bust.

If I should fall in love again
I’ll turn around and count to ten
Another fool can jump my train
If I should fall in love again.

I'm a sucker for a thoughtful arrangement; I like the way this one keeps evolving and building. I anticipated the little guitar rake on "bust" and felt some really great frisson as it happened. Delightful.

Wow, really love this. Thoughtful arrangement, as uncleozzy said. Did you play this upright bass? The pacing is great, and the harmony on the chorus captures the song's melancholy.

This is kinda how I wish a band like Squeeze had ended up sounding like in 2021. It felt like it could easily have been sung by anyone in Squeeze. Nicely structured and arranged, and the ticking beat had me from the start.

Also I am a sucker for the Vibraphone setting. That and Glockenspiel are my secret pleasures.

Thanks muchly for taking the time to listen and comment guys - appreciated. The Squeeze comparison made me smile (I never liked 'em!!).

Finally following up on greenish's MetaTalk invitation of March 30 and I find this superb song. I listened twice earlier this afternoon, went out to the garden and found myself humming it, which I'm sure the seedlings appreciated. Now I've listened again about five times and familiarity hasn't dulled my enjoyment one bit.

I'm no musician so can't say anything about the melody and the arrangement and such beyond I like 'em. But I know a good collection of words when I hear one and these lyrics are spot on. Loved the shift in tone for "All the ectasy" and the long wait for "... guarded and mysterious".

Great song, rings true.

Well thank you very much valetta - it’s nice to know the song resonated with you. You don’t have to be a musician to like a melody or a poet to like a lyric. If it hits the spot - that’s all that matters. Strictly speaking I’m not a musician either - I can’t read music and have no idea what I’m doing in technical terms. It’s all instinct and gut. So long as it works - who cares!
