Going Down to Die

A Danzig cover (aahh!) I used to love the early Danzig albums back in high school. Three or four months ago I had a nice night and must have remembered the band because I woke up with this. It has since been remastered several times ( took out a lot of bass on the guitar ) and many attempts to post have been made (some nights you just can't figure out LAME). Like everything else I seem to have thrown together so far, it's one take on guitar (with vocals from that take bleeding in) and then one for vocals which were doubled. I added some shit in the left at a couple places.

The Day of the Christmas Parade

Hollywood is famous for its annual Christmas Parade, which inspired the song "Here Comes Santa Claus (Right Down Santa Claus Lane)", which Gene Autrey wrote after playing Santa in the parade and hearing children call out to him. I decided to write my own song about the event, as experienced by slightly older children -- the homeless teens who used to (and probably still do) squat in abandoned buildings and under bridges in Hollywood. Ah, memories. [more inside]

Clueless

A bitter rock song first written and recorded not long after my last band's original lineup fell apart. That band's ugly break-up (partly triggered by the failure of our band mates' marriage) coincided with both my mom's cancer recurring in terminal form and my wife's losing her job of four years because we stayed in Germany with my mom too long. So we had plenty of pent up bitterness to spare. We performed this song live as Pocket Novel Mystery after re-forming briefly with a new line-up, but when this recording was made, it was just me and my wife, Lori. [more inside]

I Know A Guy Named Dan Huff

My good friend Dan Huff came to visit last week, and he brought copies of his new album. Dan is the most prolific songwriter and music maker I know, and absolutely one of my greatest influences. Writing and recording can be daunting tasks for normal musicians, but Dan has a love for music so intense that no barrier ever stands in his way. If Dan Huff can record an entire album in the back of his truck, then there are no excuses for the rest of us. Nothing should get between the artist and the audio tape. That's why Dan's newest album is so important. You can listen to some samples on his myspace page, but he's given me permission to post the album in its entirety on the internet, and I think you Mefites would be particularly interested in listening to it.
