Um... sorry, but this song might not be about you...

Hey Mefi Musicians! Do you or have you ever had a significant other? Did you feel your songwriting was at all compromised? How do you continue to write the songs you feel you need to write? [more inside] posted by Corduroy at 3:25 PM PST - 16 comments

Ain't Misbehavin' (#3)

Another cover of this awesome song, which I will be playing until the day I die. I'm getting damned good at stride piano if I do say so myself.

A sickly imitation

A “cover” of Autechre's Cichli made by splicing together tiny pieces of nearly every other song released by Autechre, making a tour through their discography in reverse chronological order. My minimalist video makes this a bit more entertaining and easier to follow by flashing each song's title every time a piece of it is used. [more inside]

Change my voice

I am laying down some hip-hop tracks with vocals. I don't like how my voice sounds. Outside of Auto-tune, what other things can I do to make my voice sound slightly different without making it sound ridiculously vocoded / auto-tuned posted by jasondigitized at 7:43 AM PST - 13 comments

John the Revelator

Here's another tune from an earthquake/tsunami disaster relief benefit show that i was part of on April 8, 2011. This one is a traditional gospel number. Video here.

Poets' Corner

Crossed my mind the other day whether it would be good to have a kind of sideline of MeFiMu where poetry could posted for comment etc. I don't mean lyrics - which aren't synonymous with poetry imo (discuss, if you can be arsed) - although I guess they could be included in Poets' Corner provided they were clearly tagged as such. My second effort in the electronica realm. This has sampled acoustic guitar, and is a sort of chillout tune with soul. I'm actually pretty proud of this one. Sounds to me like a sunset.

Rock The Casbah

What with revolutions going on in the Middle East, this seems like a particularly appropriate song right now. It's a cover of the Clash's fantastic original, although I have to say I'm not sure Joe Strummer would recognise it as being anything close to his creation. Video version is here. [more inside]

Dog Explosion, Pt. 1

My next-door neighbours have a Scottish terrier which, upon being let into the backyard from inside the house, immediately yips so loudly that each bark forces it off the ground in a fit of screechy rage. Trey has a similarly annoying stupid-nosed Pekingese living above him, though its alleged "bark" is more of a failure, altogether. It's almost like someone timestretched the sound of basketball trainers on a gymnasium floor. There's no real attack; the sound just appears, then vanishes, only to return moments later. In retribution for these grievances, we have now made two separate attempts to make the latter dog explode via sonic assault. It's not supposed to be good; it's supposed to be incendiary. Please also enjoy this video for part 2. [more inside]

Alabama Bound

Just came across this the other day, fishing around in one of my drives. I recorded it four years ago as a simple take, direct to 2-track in one pass, with WaveDrum and vocal. I think I'd originally intended to add more tracks and flesh it out, but listening now I thought, hey, it's OK as is, stripped down to barest essentials and presented as a live take. Unfortunately, since the vocal and drum are on the same stereo track, I couldn't do as much post processing as I would've liked (especially comp on the drum) but c'est la vie.
