fundraising for metafilter

Hey! As you may know, metafilter is in a shaky position financially, and is doing a big fundraiser this month. aielen from the metafilter steering committee reached out to see if the music zone might be up for doing some fun fundraising activities between now and early December. This is a thread for music-related fundraising ideas. [more inside]

looptober

Anyone else doing looptober this year? The idea is to try make a short repeating musical loop every day in October. I’ve done it for the last few years and enjoyed it, and I’m hoping I’ll find the energy and inspiration for it again this year.

Is anyone up for Synthruary? It's one of those things where you take a shot and making something for most of the month. It's very open-ended, and you can drop in and out as you please.

Can you make requests?

While I can flail away slightly at the banjo, I am not past the 2-chord stage and can't manage to play and sing at the same time, which seems like wizardry. There's a teeny >20-second song I'd like to make for a thing I'm doing in July. Can I ask, or is that out of place for MeFi Music? [more inside]

Music video and vinyl release!

Hey folks, I posted this over in the Projects section: an incredible music video for my song Again, featuring hand made puppets and miniatures! I wanted to share here because I have been posting songs here (89 of them!) since I was 17, and the support from this community made a world of difference in my songwriting. For a long time, the ONLY people I shared my music with were you all. Probably all the songs on the album have been posted (probably in 2 or 3 forms) on this website. BUT if you'd like to order a vinyl or special edition vinyl to support a local charity in Seattle, visit seththomas.bandcamp.com. Thank you all for your support over the years (er, decade plus).

Cod philosophy 101

If a track is posted to MeFiMu, and there’s no-one around to hear it, does it make a sound? “Philosophers have long argued that sound, colour, taste, smell and touch are all secondary qualities which exist only in our minds. We have no basis for our common-sense assumption that these secondary qualities reflect or represent reality as it really is. So, if we interpret the word ‘sound’ to mean a human experience rather than a physical phenomenon, then when there is nobody around there is a sense in which the falling tree makes no sound at all. It’s much like posting tracks to MetaFilter Music” https://blog.oup.com/2011/02/quantum/ Yup - I’m slightly lockdown-crazy and have time on my hands.....

Where else do you share/collab/etc.?

Hi folks: I realize the irony of my asking this as my first-ever post to MeFiMuTa, but I'm wondering where else folks are congregating online to share their work. For feedback, community, the sheer joy or process of making ... open to any reasons. How large or small of a community is it? Is it constrained by your genre? Do you feel like there are good spaces out there for the work you do? And even so, what are you missing in those communities (aside from the glaringly obvious dearth of playing and sharing in-person)? (Yes, I'm way behind in posting music here, but I'm trying to put in the work now to do better here and elsewhere, hence the question.)

Check-In thread

I'm curious how everyone is feeling about MeMu these days. There is a lot going on at MeTa with regard to site processes, moderation etc. & I don't think it's unfair to say that there is a bit of a sea change taking place at MeFi these days. I figured there might as well be a thread in MeMu to talk about it as needed. Anyone have any thoughts about how things are going here and anything they'd like to see done differently?

Opinion: The Pretty Reckless are the best rock band in 40 years

These folks are talented in a way I haven't seen in years. Just watch them perform on YouTube. The singer's range and the way she can stretch it out is extraordinary. The first time I heard them on the radio back in 2010-11, I couldn't believe it was on the air. Their tune "Follow me Down." It seems to be about a frickin' blow job, for cryin' out loud. The lead singer is Taylor Momsen, a child actor who we saw in that show "Gossip Girls." She says acting is a piece of cake, performing live is what it's all about. Mind you, with all this "incel" stuff, maybe their tune (it's absolutely phenomenal rock) "Why'd You Bring A Shotgun to the Party" is a bit inflammatory. Drums, bass, lead, singer. Power trio with a great, great front. So refreshing! Really hope they can make more music together.

MeMu Pals (a retrospective/feel good thread)

Anyone want to share some stories of friendships that have blossomed from the MeFiMu community? For my part, I gotta say this particular corner of the internet remains the nearest/dearest online community (music-related or otherwise) I've ever been a part of, and has been the starting point of a some really cool friendships (not to mention cool traxxxxx). Thought I would post a thread for us to share stories of how music collabs have turned into friendships, give a shout out to past collaborators and/or favourite collab tracks, and basically otherwise just have a mini-celebration of our singularly (dys)functional online musical family.

Any one up for a wee collaboration?

I've been lucky enough to be able to record vocals for some really talented people here - ochenk, rangefinder 1.4, not_on_display - and I'd like to do some more. As they could all tell you, I'm quite rubbish at replies as sometimes my job drains me of any will to live, so it would be a casual and potentially leisurely collaboration. And I can only sing into my phone and link you to Allihoopa like some kind of caveperson and then expect you to do all the actual work of composing and mixing and that. If that all sounds like fun for you then let me know! All genres welcome. Except that one. Thanks.

Challenge Idea: Username-inspired songs?

Admittedly potentially fraught! Similar to how a previous challenge invited non-MefiMusic regulars to opt-in by suggesting ideas for songs (e.g. set "When The Toad Came Home" to music), what about writing songs inspired by MeFite's usernames? They'd (we'd) have to volunteer themselves and willing Challenge-takers could call dibs on whichever they liked. Slight potential for drama, but considering some of the more creative, odd or merely unfamiliar usernames I reckon there's plenty of potential to whip up a song/piece/ditty based exclusively on the name given not the person. Good/iffy/bad idea? I lean towards iffy, but I'm a natural pessimist.
