RIP, Solomon Burke

October 10, 2010 4:14 AM

Mr. Solomon Burke, who was arguably the last living link to an age of soul music that has now passed, has just died. Rest in peace, you beautiful singer of songs. NYT Obituary. Wiki page.

I had just seen him very recently, performing in Tokyo on his first and only trip to Japan. His voice was something, well, sublime. So happy to have had that one chance, at least, to hear the man who could still stand in the shoes of giants like Otis Redding, jackie Wilson, Sam Cooke, etc. I would've made an FPP to the blue, but was unable at this time. Someone else probably will.

If You Need Me

Cry To Me

and you may remember this one from The Blues Brothers movie:

Everybody Needs Somebody To Love

and the Solomon Burke of much more recent times, with the wonderful None Of Us Are Free.
