Fleets by Heminator

Up until last fall I played guitar in a band here in the D.C. area called Cartel. (Later we changed our name to Cedars because of trademark issues.) This song was from our demo, which was recorded by Jason Caddell of the late, great Dismemberment Plan.

I'm no longer in the band and they trudge on without me. But it was fun while it lasted -- we opened for some pretty cool bands such as Stellstarr*, Giant Drag, Sea Ray and Trash Can Sinatras. In case you're wondering, that's not a keyboard in the song, just my guitar and a pretty odd delay.

Once upon a time, there was a band named Thred. It imploded because our manager was hot and three of the guys in the band couldn't keep their hands off her. We recorded this one for a benefit CD that never materialized, in a studio where I eventually found myself working, learning how to use ProTools. I mixed most of this myself, just for the hell of it. (The song takes aim at local band Carbon Leaf, whom we didn't think were deserving of the praise they were getting. I just can't see a penny whistle on the MTV except for R.E.M., and you ain't them...)

I'm not ready to unload any of my instrumental piano music on here yet, so here's another band songthe only song I've ever written for a band. The original version only exists on poorly recorded minidisc recordings of live shows, and I can't stand listening to that version any more because after I brought it to the band it quickly dawned on me that I had just written The Beatles' "Glass Onion" all over again. Oops. So this here's a 70s groove version of the song I just started working on today. My plan is to get a new band together and rerecord it like this.

Like Sun by chococat

I think this'll be my last music post for a while, until I get my shit together, as it were. Thought I'd round it off at a nice even 10.
And, I thought it fitting to post this super-old song, ('98 or '99), which was my first attempt at "multitrack hard disk recording," with one Sure SM58 mic, some crappy Mac software on an old biege G3, handclaps and a LittleTikes" toy piano. I used what I had.
Way back when, I posted it on sites like the old mp3.com and it got some nice feedback which felt awesome and immediate and kind of weird and new. After a while I got sort of jaded with all the online music site stuff because it was clearly becoming the "So You Think You Can Dance" of the Internet, at the time.
Posting stuff recently to music.metafilter has rekindled a lot of that fun, immediate kind of vibe for me, so I thought this was a good way to complete the circle.
At the time I called this "a happy song about sad people," which I guess it is. It was written after leaving a shitty job. It sounds kind of corny and twee now, and the recording quality is pretty shite, but it was sincere at the time. Cheers everyone.

In preview this seems like way too much information. Oh well.

A quick manic shuffle in D minor. This song was written around the same time as "Hole In My Mood" but a little bit later when I was in the early stages of an acute manic episode. The lyrics are quite telling (I was sort of writing it to myself). And the 13 or so different chords in the chorus and the fancy finger work should have been a warning.
