I downloaded a karaoke file to help find out how the arrangement was put together (although the file I downloaded seems to have some odd deviations from the original track). Somehow I ended up rearranging the tracks and assigning them to string quartet, woodwind, church organ, marimba and dulcimer. And TR808. Not real, of course. I liked the way it sounded enough to keep it. And then I put vocals on it, and I don't know whether it didn't all go (as Satie would put it) au form du poire.

Happy Sunday, hive mind! Well, I haven't been performing jazz much since moving to the Bay area. I'll confess, I've missed my musicians in LA (see song title) & just haven't found my niche/comfort zone up here yet. For a while, I was commuting down South to work on a CD but it got to be too difficult... so my musical life has been in limbo & this year I REALLY hope to change that. Ok, so here's my spin on another old song. This Walter Donaldson/Gus Kahn composition was first featured in Florenz Zeigfield's 1928 Broadway musical Whoopee, starring Eddie Cantor & Ruth Etting, who took the song to #2 on the charts. In 1955, Doris Day starred in a biographical movie about Etting called "Love Me or Leave Me" & her updated rendition became a giant hit. Flash forward to 1967... Nina Simone turned this hokey old Ziegfeld tune into a completely reworked masterpiece of piano & voice (download link is at bottom). My own version (heard best live, I think) is definitely inspired by Nina's, but it could never compare to hers -- I just do my own thing & try to make it my own a bit. It's a fun song to do... audiences seem to love it. Incredible basswork once again provided by bass God Chris Conner.

This was written out of intense affection for my EVE Online playing nerd girl (a soft orchestral arrangement of it is going to be our wedding processional, awww) and was released on 8bitpeoples' 8BP050 compilation CD. This song is a direct result of a Flickr comment. I took a photograph, titled Chain and Shadow, and posted it to Flickr in March. A contact there, who knows my music, commented: "chain & shadow" is sweet. get out your strumstick and write a song.... And I thought, yeah, he's right, there's a song there for sure. I wrote one, and recorded it yesterday. I also discovered that "chain and shadow" (or some close variant) is a popular photographic theme indeed at Flickr. Hope y'all enjoy the tune. When we played this song live, Azeem used a vocoder during the bridge. He forgot it in California when we recorded, so we used a clarinet, melodica, and recorder in it's place.

One of the first songs my band Bone Table put together. We recorded it in July last year in the lounge room of a 16th floor apartment in Hong Kong. None of the neighbours seemed to mind the noise. It's a mid-paced song - lots of guitars, and if you listen carefully you'll hear the drummer smacking a piece of pipe.
