New York March

One more 1865 banjo tune for the city songs challenge trifecta! This is another Frank B. Converse composition. Fretless banjo and tambourine, a bit of reverb for extra stateliness.

Philadelphia Jig

Boston Jig

Getting in just under the wire for the May/June city song challenge, this is a short little banjo tune from Buckley's New Banjo Method of 1860. Fretless minstrel banjo, parlor guitar, bones and tambourine.

Year of Jubilo

This month's challenge isn't much of a challenge for someone who plays oldtime music anyway, but I figure I get extra points for recording this American Civil War era tune on my new gourd banjo. [more inside]

Old Friend

It's been way, way, way too long since I posted any music here, or in fact recorded anything. Anyway, it's always rough starting back up, but always a little interesting. Here's a song I was planning on submitting for the monthly challenge, but apparently I am unable to make scary music. [more inside]

Fingerpickujah

A largely pointless endeavor, a rendition of Hallelujah with quick fingerpicking and banjos (what's new?).

Hillbillujah

This is the soundtrack to a movie about Leonard Cohen going on a rafting trip in rural Appalachia. [more inside]

All Day Long

Very short and perhaps sweet. I've been working on this kind of music for a while and this is a good example of where I'm at with it right now. Two Chord Challenge!!! ENJOY! [more inside]

Elves in Iceland

Sort of a cheating entry to the wildcard challenge - a flowy, stringy instrumental. [more inside]

A short instrumental, played over an old tape of me reading something in French as a kid. [more inside]

Jessamyn's Song

Well boys and girls, I imagine this is what it would sound like if one was lucky enough to hang out on the front porch with our favorite banjo picking librarian. Yes, that's jessamyn on banjo! (collaboration)

Sidewinder

Tuned the guitar way down and added some banjo. This song does this thing where it equates "snake" with "girl." Like a metaphor, see. Also: it seems to play better through headphones (possibly because of the use of stereo). But maybe I just have bad speakers.

the River Girl

A song by my band, the Notes and Scratches, kind of about Vivian Eliot and featuring a bunch of water. I sing and play the acoustic and the harmonium.

The most frozenest river around

A song inspired by crossing the frozen river Neva in Saint Petersburg, Russia. This song is short, simple, and basically three choruses and no verses. That's right - screw the verses!
