Dr Matt [The In Out cover]

A song we played when I was in The In Out circa 1994-1996, but I don't know if they ever recorded it after I departed. So I decided to cover it twenty years later. [more inside]

Back To You

In the spirit of "Superstar" by legendary art-punk band Sonic Youth (who were covering The Carpenters chart-breaking track), here is 'Back to You'. Sonically similar, but content-wise very different. No superstar imagery from the perspective of a groupie here. Just some self-searching and hopefully grounding elements. [more inside]

Kiev

Ethereal wave is what they call this genre, but you can definitely sense elements of early 4AD-era postpunk, darkwave, shoegaze and postpunk here. The mood is a bit heavier and there is an outpouring of philosophy, moral and emotional reaction. Enjoy! [more inside]

NIMBY (Not In My Backyard)

Perhaps the most Cocteau Twins' inspired song by Ummagma to date, this song also features a strong pulse-driven effect inspired by Pink Floyd. Need I say more?

Adaptation

Soundscapes are part of the fabric for various genres of music and this song creates one merging several genres, yet is still hard to put your finger on.

BFD

Reminiscent of the Peter Gabriel and Deep Forest contribution to the film "Strange Days", this Ummagma track offers an eclectic earful of modernity meets tradition, complete with Carpathian whistle and balanced out with successive male and female vocals. [more inside]

Lama

A love for the golden 4AD era, Pink Floyd and the likes of David Sylvian have all been woven into the thread of this music. "Lama" was both inspired by these bands and reflects their contribution to a new generation of musicmakers. Looking forward, but knowing where our roots lieā€¦ I sincerely hope you will all enjoy this Ummagma track. [more inside]

Workshop

A song by (my band) Freelove Fenner about handicrafts and labour. Features layered guitar, farfisa, bass, drums and my reverbed voice. Recorded on an Otari 1" 8-track.

Threnody

Boisterous, jangly, synthy indie/ post-punk from The Ghost of Mankind. This is a rehearsal recording with a couple of cringe-inducing moments. This track, along with the previous two (1, 2), comprise an unreleased three-song EP tentatively titled Elegiac, almost recorded in summer 2003.

Another song by my band the christian science monitors. We are currently on hiatus as we live on different sides of the continent. I hope you like it.

Warren Peacetime

I wrote/recorded this song when I had moved to a new city and was shopping around for a new band/songwriting collaborator. For a lot of reasons, that didn't happen and am thinking about resurrecting it and putting vocals to it, but I have a niggling sense that it sounds too much like some tune from the 80s I can vaguely remember. Any ideas? Guitars, bass by me, drumming by my faithful drum machine, whom I call "Steve".

State of the Union

Another jangly new-wavey track from The Ghost of Mankind. Same session as the last one.

I am a demon and will swallow your soul!

My band, the Christian Science Monitors, will be playing it's last show on the 16th of July in Montreal. We recorded a few songs that we were pretty happy with, and will eventually finish an EP. Let me know what you think.

Everybody Goes To Mona's

Jangly post-punk (indie? rock? whatever.) from The Ghost of Mankind. Me on the drums, ridiculously hungover and half a beat behind. From an unreleased EP recorded in a warehouse in Greenpoint in 2003.
