Hearts In Ruins, etc.

My band recorded this in my basement the night before our show at the blind pig. (The second song is Wasted Hearts.)

No Exit

I wrote this song around 1992 or 1993, wanting it to be a guitar song even though I hadn't really picked up the instrument. I re-recorded it recently, using a lot of the original arrangement from my cassette demo, and it's not working for me. So I'd like some feedback.

Dear Editor

Awhile ago I spent way too much time reading a thread on the always excellent Marginal Revolution blog discussing possible tactics for dealing with sudden and unwelcome time-travel to 1000 A.D. Clearly the thread needed to be put to music. (OK, it was clear to me at least.) That was so much fun that I thought it might be fun to do it again. And Tyler over at Marginal Revolution was nice enough to participate for another round. Then Tyler announced the topic - “Are Books Overwritten?” Ruh ro.

Don't Ask, Don't Tell

The actual title of this song is 「聞いてはいけない、言ってはいけない」, which is pronounced "Kiite wa Ikenai, Itte wa Ikenai". I probably ought to be more out than I am, but I like seeing the reaction of people who don't suspect when I do come out. (Doesn't work on other gay men, though.)

Days Like This

It seemed time for an uncomplicated pop song (not that any of my songs are super complex in the first place). But in this nice little package you get everything you’re looking for in a standard radio-friendly pop song (does anyone listen to the radio anymore?)...

SkyMall (Jonathan Coulton cover)

A few months ago I decided I wanted to try and do a cover. Based on the result, it was clearly a bad idea. I probably should have been discouraged but instead, after months of therapy, I decided to try again. The victim this time was one of my favorite artists - Jonathan Coulton and his excellent song SkyMall.

Victor's a Dictionary

Written back at the turn of the millennium (oh the good old days) this song is about our old friend Victor. He’s an ethnic Chinese, Australian born doctor who abandoned medicine (and Sydney) to embrace the “structured” world of computer programming and the United States. Once you understand the laws that govern Victor’s existence you can compile him quite reliably.

Wrote this a few years ago. An introspective song about a place to be introspective.

Terry (The Probably Drunk and Definitely Angry Stewardess)

Song about an unreasonably angry stewardess. Everyone's written one of these.

casanova ruins

I was walking around in the garment district at night on valentine's day years ago, and spotted a beautiful woman walking alone across the street. Despite being glamorously dressed up, she looked like she had lost all faith in men. She was carrying a heart-shaped balloon and huge flowers. This song is sort of about that.

Rule 34

If you don’t know what “Rule 34″ is, just pull out your trusty Urban Dictionary and look it up. Go ahead, I’ll wait.

Stone Mover

Another demo for our album that is in production. Sung by my friend and drummer Neil who has recently found his voice. A song of regret and the often crushing weight of unconditional love.

School Bus

A new song this summer. I had a postable semi-instrumental version of this, but decided to wait until I fleshed it out. Thus, this is a pretty fleshed-out version, with vocals and about 12 tracks.

Betty (Sugar Fix)

This song is about a love rectangle. The singer is in love with Betty, she’s in love with a boy who treats her like crap. He is in love with Betty’s rich best friend who treats both him and Betty like crap. Everyone’s pretty much miserable except possibly for the best friend who’s oblivious to people’s feelings.

1000 A.D. (Sugar Fix)

Inspired by the Marginal Revolution thread giving advice on what to do if you find yourself suddenly transported back to Europe 1000 years ago with nothing but the clothes on your back.

Rock n' roll song (about rock n' roll)

We know that rock about rock rarely rocks. And we know that rock about rock about rock rocks. But how about covers of rock about rock about rock?

Rock n' roll song (about rock n' roll)

I was inspired by Cortex's argument here that "songs that explicitly talk about how great rock and roll are rarely rock."

Playground

Recorded live to 24-track digital at our most recent show. My band The Dukes of Simpleton is an XTC tribute project, so no we didn't write it, but I'm pretty sure we're the only people playing any XTC songs live in a 1000 mile radius.

In Piles/On File

Were my rock band to have a "hit single," it would be this. It filts squarely into the description of "thrilling guitar driven indie-rock music" if that's your thing.

Blackbox Blues

Piano! Mellotron! Squealing guitars! Stewardesses! I've been working on this for a few weeks now. It's one of the more complex arrangements I've attempted in a while. I think I'm getting close to done, but I could really use some feed back. Thanks, folks!

Radiohead - "Nude (Strings Remix)"

The result here is spending a few free days on my couch with my violin and computer. I would love all comments/criticism from anybody, as this is something I'd like to continue experimenting with. The Happiness of Not Having to Lift Things

This is a new piece our band, Falex9, is developing. We didn't know what to do with it lyric-wise until after we finally got a permanent rehearsal room in Seattle and realized how happy we were that we didn't have to lug our gear around anymore. The song may have a slightly deeper meaning in the future as we refine the lyrics / music. Either way, it's been a fun playing it.

Life Through Veils

Old recording from 1990. Music Recorded live, with the middle section and ending being written extemporaneously in the studio, vocals are the only overdubs. Originally 24 track, but this was rescued from cassette, hence the crap quality. I wrote the music and the singer wrote the words and melody. I sang backup.
