High and Dry

A cover of Radiohead's H&D on resonator guitar in open G, for the minor/major challenge. I originally intended this to be a shitkicking country stomper but it turned into something quite different. [more inside]

Hold On To Love (simplified version)

I decided to rearrange this song that I posted before to take out some of the crazy modulation and make it more straightforward. What do you think? [more inside]

Such Great Heights (cover)

I've always had a soft spot for this Postal Service song, so here's an acoustic cover featuring resonator guitar, pump organ, and ten copies of me. Lighters out for the last chorus, please.

Carnival of Lies

One-take before-pants demo of a cynical little song that's been buzzing round in my head recently. Video here. [more inside]

Girl on a Swing (Ballad of a Cavalryman)

This is a super-rough demo of a song I wrote yesterday for the 'Has Been for Years' song fight. It's a gothic little waltz using a resonator guitar, told from the point of view of a trooper in the 7th cavalry who was killed at Little Big Horn while waiting to be relieved by Reno's troops. Recorded before I put my pants on, for the challenge. Video proof is here. [more inside]

The Sun Still Shines (when your heart is breaking)

A quick semi-impromptu-one-take-in-my-pajamas recording of a sad little Wilco/Elliot Smith-ish song that's been buzzing around my head. Using a crappy MXL mic which I really don't like, but was the closest to hand. [more inside]

Rock, Paper, Scissors

I've been trying to come up with a love story titled ROCK, PAPER, SCISSORS for a movie, but this fell out instead. Video link inside. [more inside]

The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face

Cover of the Ewan McColl classic, at the original speed for once. So I know covering a classic like this is pretty dumb -- how you gonna compete with Johnny Cash, Peggy Seeger and Roberta Flack? But I was really curious about something I read, so I wanted to try an experiment. [more inside]

You and San Francisco

Only took me fifteen years to finish this song. Story inside. [more inside]

Darker Shade of Blue

Another semi-autobiographical 1995 slice of cheerful melancholia. But a pretty guitar riff and one of my favorite choruses to sing, even if I never really could hit the last note. There's an electric version of this with more of a Big Star / Matthew Sweet feel, but darned if I can find it and anyway I like this one. [more inside]

Seventeen Below

Me, a 4-track, a guitar, some cigarettes and some booze. Probably the most autobiographical thing I've ever written. That I'll cop too, anyway. And one of my favorites too. [more inside]
