And the Sunlight Among the Trees

A short (1:27) original piece of me on solo piano. It's a reworking / different arrangement of a previous tune I posted, which was piano & guitar. This is a slightly different take on rhythm and melody -- more of a contemplative feeling, and still reflective and reassuring (I hope). Happy new year, MetaFilter! [more inside]

Ruby Prelude

Piano solo. This opens none too gently at about 138bpm and covers a lot of territory inside three minutes. It should flow nicely into its companion piece, Turquoise Migration. [more inside]

The Sugar in my Tea

A short piano piece that all spins out from the opening motto: "You are the sugar in my tea..."

Fruitbattery

A short piano solo! Minor key, triplet feel, maybe a little jazzy, better suited to Halloween than early spring, but what can I do? It's a free download at BandCamp complete with suitably batty artwork. [more inside]

Rhapsody in January

Some Garageband piano. Apparently I'm ready for January already.

Partyin'. - Hamps.

A very crap-quality song I wrote using three chords on a synthesizer keyboard and a terrible singing voice. Anyone who knows me knows that this entire thing is a massive satire, so don't take the lyrics or the cheesiness at face value. On second thought, I am probably even more cheesy than this song tells. Too Blue

"This was an improvisation, actually the second take (Blue 2, or "Too Blue"), during which I had the memory of the Monterey Jazz festival firmly planted in my head, remembering the incredible musicians and music I heard all over the fairgrounds, playing jazz, soul, and lots 'n lots of blues…" ~ Laurie Z.

The Pianimal: Episode 1 - Tom Waits Covers

Recorded live in my living room on Monday night, the debut episode of this four-song, one-take podcast is my way of making sure I DO something with the piano in the corner. Each song fits a certain theme (this episode, it's Tom Waits covers), and there are no re-takes or edits allowed. It's the Pianimal -- and it's ALIVE! [more inside]

VCR (Perpetual Bridge)

Another song on the new keyboard. Basically, the loop is four bridge ('fill') rhythms from the keyboard's analog drum kit, so I figure it's a good enough musical joke to submit it for 'bridge'. Anyway. it's kinda made up as I go (as before, live looping with my baby, and it's louder than my last one and attempts to be less sleepy. Critique welcomed, as always.

Piano piano piano

I think this is a pretty fun riff/song. Using a piano, loop pedal, and recording on my laptop Critique the hell out of it, as usual. (And, yes, I'm technically no pianist.) Any suggestions about how to 'flesh it out' would be welcome, too!

Soundtrack Lite

This is a song I wrote in 1992, I got around to recording it in 2004. There are a few imperfections and I would like to record it again...a better longer version. Tell me if you like it.

Yellow (Mic Test Demo)

An acoustic rough draft—the first thing I recorded after I bought my first condesor mic. Pretty, improvised.
