Synthruary
Is anyone up for Synthruary? It's one of those things where you take a shot and making something for most of the month. It's very open-ended, and you can drop in and out as you please.
Can We Do A Challenge?
Let's do it! Even if it's not great. Even if it's bloody brilliant! Even if I, one Rando Calrissian, call for it yet never myself contribute! Even then!
Let's do a thing! Brainstorm below maybe?
One Song To the Genre Of Another
Following on from the post about haunting covers I thought I might submit the idea for your consideration for future challenges: To record a version of a song changing the genre in such a way that it changes the meaning of the song. [more inside]

new Challenge thread at MetaTalk
Folks, this thread is not really for commenting in, it's simply a heads up for those of you here at MeFiMu who don't ordinarly visit MetaTalk. MeFi Music stalwart snsranch has posted a Music Challenge-related thread there, and I urge you to drop in and get your two-cents-and-an-eighth-note in on the discussion. As for this thread right here, if you wanna post something, hey, just tell us some good musician jokes, even though we'll probably have heard them all.

Sayonara, amigos, and a last Challenge idea
If you happened to read this comment, you'll know that I am stepping down from my position as Unofficial Mod for the MeFi Music Challenge. This post is just to say thank you to all the wonderful people here who've sent suggestions for the Challenge, and to thank you all for putting up with my evil and wicked ways over the past, um... however long it's been. It's been a pleasure to do this, and I'm hoping someone else will step up and take this gig over. I'd also like to apologize to anyone whose idea didn't get put into motion. This was sometimes due to my own feeling that it might not have been the greatest idea, or more often that there were too-similar ideas that had already been used, or were in line to be used. Well, I did my humble best. Anyway, thanks again to everyone. [more inside]
Challenge Idea: Burlesque Music
Listening to Ring My Bell: Tango made me wonder: could we have a MeFi Music challenge for songs to burlesque to? [more inside]
JULY 2010 MUSIC CHALLENGE
Write a Summer Song: Be it bubblegum or anthem, strive to capture the elusive vibe of the Summer Tune that you actually don't mind hearing over and over, and which works its way into your mind to be endlessly inseparable from a certain time and place. Or something. Can be more literal (hot weather, vacation, etc.) or more about getting the feel of a summer hit, whatever. [more inside]
March MeFiMu Challenge: Multiplication!
Hi Mefi musicians, flapjax here. I received a suggestion just the other day that I want to go with for March. I'll simply reprint Mefier Mhead's enthusiastically worded letter verbatim:
I think a great idea for the music challenge would be to sing the multiplication table. There are high-priced multiplication table songs out there but they are overpriced garbage. You guys could do so much better! Think of all the kids you could help. Many kids, particularly learning disabled, learn the times table by listening to the multiplication table sung to music.
A few suggestions would be to maybe make it fun with a few rhymes here and there (like three times three is nine… a mighty fine design…), repetition, repetition, repetition, and go slow. You could even have one person do the twos, another the threes and so on.
So, have at it, y'all! Please tag your submission "multiplication" in addition to the usual "mefimusicchallenge"

It's that time again...RPM Challenge - its 5th year! Who's in?

Suggestion for an upcoming challenge: grab lyrics from your favorite gangsta rap song and use them in a decidedly not-hip-hop style. [more inside]
HOPE US FLAPJAX
Despite the box at the top of the Music page constantly taunting "Updated!" there doesn't seem to be a Music Challenge for October yet. [more inside]
Monthly MeFiMu Challenge thread - Sept. 09 edition
Well, the August Challenge (Mefi Jingle) got a grand total of 8 submissions, which was less than I would've imagined. I had all sorts of good intentions to get at least one in myself, but alas, other commitments conspired against that. I'd actually envisioned doing one for each subsite (AskMe, Projects, etc) and I plan on doing that in the future, but without the mefimusicchallenge tag, I guess. Oh well... [more inside]

Monthly MeFiMu Challenge thread - August edition
So, here in my neck o' the woods it's already August 1, but many of you western hemisphere types still have a few hours to get your VU&N covers in under the deadline. I'm counting about 35 submissions in as of right now (with just a few hours left in the month!), which is, of course, below the number of folks who signed on, but, hey, that's life in the slow lane! I'm hoping for an avalanche of last-minute masterpieces. But meanwhile... on to the next! So without further ado... [more inside]
Future Challenge idea - MeFiMu jingle/ringtone
This meets my personal criteria for a good challenge - quick and fun. Only one rule - has to be less than 30 seconds duration. Thoughts? Comments?

You and the Velvet Underground and Nico: July MeFi Music Challenge
Through a complex and all-but-inscrutable series of formulae and calculations, I have arrived at song assignments for the July Metafilter Music Challenge, which, as you probably all know, is to cover songs from The Velvet Underground & Nico. There were 35* interested participants from the original thread. With 11 songs comprising the album, we have 3 musicians for each tune, plus 2 extras, so two of the songs will get four cover treatments, if everyone comes through with their submission. To: Lenny Cohen. From: MetaFilter with love.

Monthly MeFiMu Challenge thread - June edition
Thanks to everyone who submitted a tune for the May Challenge! Thirteen submissions came in, which ain't bad. If you have any thoughts, opinions, or points you'd like to make about last month's or this month's Challenges, please do so here. Also welcome in this thread (or directly as MeMail to yours truly): ideas for future Challenges. More ideas needed!
Covered to death?
I had an idea for a Challenge, but I wanted to ask for some help, and also to see if anyone else thinks it's a decent idea... I was thinking, how about a MeFiMu Challenge where we cover a song that's been covered a LOT? I mean, let's take one of the handful of songs that's just been covered in and out and up and down, around and about, by everybody and his sister. One that there just can't possibly be anything new any of us could do with it. Then, of course, we HAVE to do something new with it!

Monthly MeFiMu Challenge thread - May edition
Thanks to everyone who submitted a tune for the April Challenge! If you have any thoughts on it, points you'd like to make, whatever, feel free. Also welcome here: ideas for future Challenges. Also, I'll go ahead and post the May Challenges (two this month) here, and they'll also be in the usual spot very soon. Looking forward to hearing what everyone comes up with for this next round. Fire up the recorders!

One more month of Challenge Amnesty? Vote here.
The "amnesty month" idea (for March MeFiMu Challenge) got a pretty good reception, and there's been a fair number of submissions. But I'm thinking another month extension might be a good idea. I have a feeling some of y'all might go for that, and there's a hella lotta good Challenges from past months that are still crying out for some love.
But, I'd like to put it to a vote. All in favor, say "aye". All against, say "enormous flaming marsupials".
And please note that your humble MeFiMu Challenge coordinator will be in the woods, waaaaay offline, between March 29 and April 1 (and that's Japan time). When I'm back on the nets, I'll check in here, tally the results, and April will either be another amnesty month (which is, er, my vote) or we'll have some new Challenges. Okay? Let the voting begin.
March MeFiMu Challenge
This month's Challenge is a one-parter: Amnesty Month - submit songs based on any previous music challenge that you may have missed. It was suggested by AppleSeed.
I though it was big enough to stand on its own, so I decided to forgo the usual 3-part (Lyric / Music / Wildcard) format. Anyone displeased with this month's Challenge please feel free to vent here!
The last two months have seen pitifully little in the way of contributions to the Challenges. Precisely 2 submissions for January, and 2 for February. The Christmas theme for December, however, had a whole buncha takers, so I guess it's just ebb and flow. I hope this month sees a little more interest in the Challenge. We shall see!

I HAVE A THOUGHT
Actually, Karlos the Jackal has a thought, that he sent me in some MeMail. I think it's a GREAT idea, and I thought I'd reprint it here for everyone to read and kick around. Here's his letter:
What do you think about starting a thread in Music Talk about the current challenges at the beginnning of every month? People can share reactions to the new challenges, discuss what did and didn't work for them with the old ones, share ideas about possibilities for future challenges, etc. More good ideas might come up when people are kicking them around rather than trying to come up with stuff in a vacuum.
Added benefits: MeFiMu Talk would be more "active," and the thread would call more attention to the challenges.
Just thinkin'.
February is Nigh
New Challenge idea from micayetoca
I've received an interesting suggestion for the Challenges that I think warrants a thread of its own, as it's something that is a little more involved, and we might want to figure out how to put into place. I think it's a pretty cool idea. The suggestion is from micayetoca, and I'll reprint the relevant portions of his mail here, cause I think this is something that could and should be discussed among all interested parties here at MeFiMu. He writes:
"How about opening a "requests" challenge, where any MefiMusician can sign up and say "I'm willing to take requests this month", collect people's requests for a month and then each musician that gets requests chooses which one he'll do? I know it has different levels and it requires a more active participation, but perhaps it could work. Whaddaya think?"
So, indeed, MeFi Musicians, whaddaya think?
Halloween lyric needs music
Halloween challenge lyric needs a tune. The music I wrote for this lyric came out sounding like it belongs to another song. So I am posting the words here in case someone wants to collaborate - there's still time to make the challence deadline. [more inside]
About this month's MeFiMu Challenge...
There were zero, yes, ZERO submissions for last month's Music Challenge. Why, heck, even yours truly didn't turn nuthin' in, and I generally don't miss a month. So... the current October Challenge is a little different: the NEW part is simply this: make something scary. A Halloween song of some sort, perhaps, like maybe a children-type scary song. Or just something incredibly frightening, like, say, a Carpenter's cover. And the OTHER part of the October Challenge is to choose one of the tragically neglected Challenge themes from LAST month. Cause, really, those weren't bad! I mean, cover a song in a language you don't speak? Man, I thought MeFiMusicians would be on that like white on rice! Not to mention the mashup Challenge, which should be fun and interesting, no?
Anyway, here's hoping that a few more Challenge tunes roll in over the course of this month. As always, don't forget to tag your submissions appropriately, and remember, keep your tape heads clean.
OK, that's all!
