fundraising for metafilter
Hey! As you may know, metafilter is in a shaky position financially, and is doing a big fundraiser this month. aielen from the metafilter steering committee reached out to see if the music zone might be up for doing some fun fundraising activities between now and early December. This is a thread for music-related fundraising ideas. [more inside]
Where else do you share/collab/etc.?
Hi folks: I realize the irony of my asking this as my first-ever post to MeFiMuTa, but I'm wondering where else folks are congregating online to share their work. For feedback, community, the sheer joy or process of making ... open to any reasons. How large or small of a community is it? Is it constrained by your genre? Do you feel like there are good spaces out there for the work you do? And even so, what are you missing in those communities (aside from the glaringly obvious dearth of playing and sharing in-person)?
(Yes, I'm way behind in posting music here, but I'm trying to put in the work now to do better here and elsewhere, hence the question.)

I'm about to release a new album titled INTERRUPT REQUEST and you can listen to a small preview at the links below. Will be released on Bandcamp in few days. I hope you will enjoy it.

In case there's anybody who follows Music Talk but not MetaTalk, Greg Nog has laid down a challenge there, to wit: "Please record a cover of a song that you only know about because it was in a post on metafilter." (See the link for more info.)

Who is reading Music?
Would a thread of introductions be useful? I was thinking about unSane's soundcloud-pony and the Balkan kingdom of Music (or MeFiMu), and realized that I don't have a very good idea of who all is reading/listening here, whether regularly or not, except for a few posters, and even then I don't know much about them apart from a few tunes. Oblique Strategies....
Came across a reference to this the other day and followed up. Wikipedia succinctly elucidates thus:
"Oblique Strategies (subtitled over one hundred worthwhile dilemmas) is a set of published cards created by Brian Eno and Peter Schmidt first published in 1975, and is now in its fifth, open ended, edition. Each card contains a phrase or cryptic remark which can be used to break a deadlock or dilemma situation. Some are specific to music composition; others are more general. Examples include:
- Use an old idea.
- State the problem in words as clearly as possible.
- Only one element of each kind.
- What would your closest friend do?
- What to increase? What to reduce?
- Are there sections? Consider transitions.
- Try faking it!
- Honour thy error as a hidden intention.
- Ask your body.
- Work at a different speed.
Here's a clip of Eno explaining matters to the thoroughly splendid Mr Jarvis Cocker.
There's also this website that allows you access to randomly selected cards. [more inside]

Personal musical standards and the perception/expectations of listeners. Discuss. You may consult the course text: "Seething Resentment: A Practical Guide"
Prompted by a response I just made to a comment by Karlos on a recent upload of mine, I thought that this might be an area of wider interest - it's certainly something that intrigues me.
Here's my response to Karlos: What I'm trying to do with stuff like this is to test some of my own perceptions, standards and boundaries. I get quite a lot of comments about my stuff being "smooth" or "well produced/mixed" and gentle criticism about it being "too musicianly" or "complicated". These are nice things to hear and MeFites are generally kindly and well-meaning souls, but I guess I want to experiment with what listeners actually perceive as important and unimportant, critical and uncritical. What do people really hear in a track?? What do they filter out?? Why?? Hence I deliberately left things in this mix of a fairly average track (so I'm not fucking up something I think is really good) that normally I wouldn't allow to be "released" just to see if anyone says "Christ, those backing vocals suck the big one and totally ruin the track".
Naturally the "experiment" depends upon people actually listening to a track! But that's beside the point in terms of a wider discussion on this topic. How much, for instance, do you care if parts of a vocal or guitar solo are out of tune?
Holy Crap, That's a Lot of Music!
Check it out: In four years & change, Metafilter Music has had over
5000 posts!
A nice round even number like that is clearly a omen that it's time to
post a collection of all the songs.
So, here's a torrent!*
It's kind of big - it weighs in at 4629 mp3s** & over 20 gigabytes.

new Challenge thread at MetaTalk
Folks, this thread is not really for commenting in, it's simply a heads up for those of you here at MeFiMu who don't ordinarly visit MetaTalk. MeFi Music stalwart snsranch has posted a Music Challenge-related thread there, and I urge you to drop in and get your two-cents-and-an-eighth-note in on the discussion. As for this thread right here, if you wanna post something, hey, just tell us some good musician jokes, even though we'll probably have heard them all.

Culs de sac....
I've posted something similar to this before - apologies - but I think it's an area where we could really help each other out. I've got a few tracks - some of them good ones - where I've got so far and hit a brick wall. I'd bet you all have some of these too. Huge frustration. It would be cool to post mp3s of these stalled tracks on the off-chance that someone can suggest ways to unlock or resolve them. They'd probably need some kind of tag to distinguish them as work-in-progress. A form of collaboration I guess....

Hating music
I was thinking about something one of our MeFiMu musicians said the other day, in a description of a song post here, about "hating" music. He didn't elaborate, so I don't know if he meant hating music in general, or hating his own music, or hating his life as a musician, or whatever, but it got me to thinking about those inevitable moments when we, as musicians, somehow or other lose confidence, or, well, whatever one can lose. I've never *hated* music per se, but I've certainly felt pretty down, on many an occasion. over the years: for example, those times when it really hits home, like a slug in the jaw, that what you're putting in time and energy-wise is not commensurate with what you're getting back dollar-wise, or interest-from-your-fellow-human-beings-wise. Those are the times when I've felt that being a musician is a raw fucking deal, and I'm just setting myself up for heartbreak and disappointment.
So, I wonder, what are the times that you "hate" music, or grow tired of music, somehow, or think of giving it all up and going into the retread tire business with your dad?
