Where else do you share/collab/etc.?

Hi folks: I realize the irony of my asking this as my first-ever post to MeFiMuTa, but I'm wondering where else folks are congregating online to share their work. For feedback, community, the sheer joy or process of making ... open to any reasons. How large or small of a community is it? Is it constrained by your genre? Do you feel like there are good spaces out there for the work you do? And even so, what are you missing in those communities (aside from the glaringly obvious dearth of playing and sharing in-person)? (Yes, I'm way behind in posting music here, but I'm trying to put in the work now to do better here and elsewhere, hence the question.)

Write what you know. Or?

One thing I've noticed overall in the songs I've written is that the ones that have a basis in reality (ie direct personal experience) tend to be the best. [more inside]

RPM Challenge 2012

Anyone doing the RPM Challenge this year? I did it 5 years ago and swore I wouldn't ever do it again as it just about killed me to get everything done on time. But the memories seem to have mellowed, because here I am making another go. [more inside]

Um... sorry, but this song might not be about you...

Hey Mefi Musicians! Do you or have you ever had a significant other? Did you feel your songwriting was at all compromised? How do you continue to write the songs you feel you need to write? [more inside]

Writing For Another Voice

Does anyone have any tips for writing songs that work well for another person's voice? I've always just kind put songs together as they come and figured we would just adjust the key if it was difficult for our singer, but I think now that is kind of short sighted. Our singer has a good voice, and our music would be better if the songs really showed that off. I'm interested in technical issues like how to determine the best keys for someone to sing in, but I'd also like to hear stories about how you have approached writing songs for others to sing and the challenges you faced. And if you'd like to make suggestions based on work we have already done, there are a lot of songs by my band posted here.

Perfect Songs

Growing up playing music in England in the 80s, playing covers was NOT what you did. You learned three chords and formed a band. However, I'm getting more and more interested in learning some 'perfect' songs. [more inside]

I've heard of "musical prose" but...

Ever written a song, or do you know of any song(s), where the lyrics are prose? As in no rhyme, no meter, no poetry - just a paragraph of prose. I'm assuming such a thing has been done by someone, just don't know that I've ever heard it... [more inside]

Songwriting/Composition for Practical People?

I'm interested in learning more about songwriting / composition. What I'm not interested in are the glut of "How to get rich writing top 40 hits for dummidiots" titles out there. [more inside]
