Tape really does sound better. And good mics, preamps, compressors, consoles...

I came across this recording from sometime in 1999 or 2000 that I made in about a half hour at the college recording studio. I scheduled some time to learn the ropes, and pretty much all I learned was that everybody involved was a Grade A tool.

I played all the parts while another newbie engineered. (I drum maybe 15 minutes a year, and it shows.) Everything was recorded onto a 16-track reel that had been recorded over too many times, and mixed down in the most inexpert of all possible manners onto a cheap TDK cassette tape with a little too much BBE sonic maximizer on the 2-bus. I suspect that this MP3 has also been treated with iZotope Ozone, but I can't be sure.

It doesn't sound good, of course, but I'm still chasing parts of this sound in my digital recordings. I never set foot in that studio again.

This is great fun. I'm fond of this song, and your version makes me think of Me First and the Gimme Gimmes.

Thanks for the comments, guys; it really was an awful lot of fun recording this. And I think I was big into Me First at the time, no surprise there.

Sounds like an impromptu encore at the end of a overwound night. Which is to say it sounds great.

And yeah, fire your drummer. /wink
