Leonard Cohen Night - BBC4 19th June

June 19, 2009 1:18 AM

Irony of ironies, there's a Leonard Cohen night on BBC4 tonight (19th June). Several programmes strung together including last year's Live In London show. Those of you living in the colonies can access this via the online BBC iPlayer, I should imagine. I feel duty bound to watch given my recent desecration of Hallethingy.....enjoy!!

I'd watch if I was in the UK. Or, living in the colonies...

The reference to "colonies" is, in case anyone has taken offence, a joke against a certain class of Englishman (like the Major) who, mercifully, have almost died out now. The sort who mourn the loss of empire and go all misty eyed at the opening bars of "Jerusalem".

I thought the "colonies" line was pretty damn funny. But as a matter of National pride, I must challenge you, MajorDundee, to a bout of fisticuffs. Or perhaps in this case you can chase me around with your walking stick as I run in circles waving a tiny American flag.

Seriously, thanks for the heads-up, I might have to check that out.

Next up, a mashup of "Hallelujah" and "Jerusalem".

Think about it MetaMusicMen...

Well I watched Len on TV last night. I taped the 2008 London show for later viewing but watched the film "Songs For My Life" about his 1973 world tour.......

.....uh-huh..........

....really trying here - gimme another beer.........

....... Len is saying "I can't sing" - I'm nodding vigorously and saying "Len, you're not wrong mate"......

....nope........

.......not a fucking thing.

I've concluded that Len is simply one of those things I don't "get". He's in good company - other things that leave me bemused/unmoved include: ballet (what the fuck is that all about??), Andrew Lloyd Webber (a man who makes music for people who don't like music), abstract expressionism, Madonna, religion, Radiohead (gasp!), broccoli, "reality" TV shows, grown men obsessed with sport (spectating not playing - I can understand if you actually take part), and on and on. Might be an interesting string.....list the things that you are supposed to like/appreciate, but secretly think are a load of bollocks.

snsranch - good idea - I am of course in a bathchair being pushed by a giggling, exceptionally busty nurse........(cue Benny Hill soundtrack)

Well, to interrupt that kind of activity would be wholly unAmerican! Carry on, please continue with your work.

This thing is going to be up only briefly, so I can't FPP it, but my fellow Cohenphiles, I give you:

Ladies and Gentlemen, Mr. Leonard Cohen, a "45-minute film from 1965 offer[ing] a candid glimpse of Cohen's pre-singer-songwriter days."
