green lights flashing (again)

September 30, 2009 2:40 PM

Nosila, recently posted the rather fantastic “green lights flashing”, and kindly gave me permission to massacre the song for the September music challenge.

This is only the second song I have sung on so I have stuck to a kind of talking vocal which seems comfortable at the moment while I get to grips with letting loose a little!

I have made a pledge to try and do all of the music challenges for a year (this is number three!) and try and sing on all of them (where they need singing). You have been warned.

GREEN LIGHTS FLASHING

1. the older I stand and the longer I get -- you know
we don't get no new place in this world -- you know

2. I'm shut-in, in your house -- you know
I'm in; you're out; I'm in; you're out; but you know

we don't get -- we don't get -- we don't get no
green lights, flash-ing, green lights, flash-ing

3. staples and chains won't keep this together -- you know
it's the way that it all goes to pieces, but you know

we don't get -- we don't get -- we don't get no
green lights, green lights, green lights, green lights, flash-ing
you know, you know, you know, you know

---
I'm shut-in -- you're locked out -- the handle's red hot -- you know?
I'm shut-in -- you're locked out -- the handle's red hot -- you know?
---

4. it's the fourth week in a row that the fireshow is out my back door
-- -- (coming in through the window)

we don't get -- we don't get -- we don't get no
green lights, flash-ing, green lights, flash-ing

5. that one shook the windowframes -- -- (you almost got back in)
thank god the shutters hold the shut-ins, in

we don't get -- we don't get -- we don't get no
green lights, green lights, green lights, green lights, flash-ing
you know, you know, you know, you know

---
I'm shut-in -- you're locked out -- the handle's red hot -- you know?
I'm shut-in -- you're locked out -- the handle's red hot -- you know?

Hells yeah! Nice work, you know, you know?

I think this is the first time I've ever been covered, and I like it! Thanks for the awesome version of my song, caterpillar.

This is pretty freakin' awesome! I love the meaty bass--the whole production is very clean, and I love the megaphone-ish-ness of the vox; kind of a tribute (I'm unsure whether it's intentional, though) to nosila's own vocal delivery style, while still giving the whole song a different feel.

Love it. Reminds me a lot of Magazine, not just the sneer on the vox but the huge guitars and rythym section, really cool.

Yeah, that bass is nice.

The vox are fun, theatrical, and surprisingly confident-sounding after reading your description.

The way the song moves into the chorus is really cool.

Thanks a lot guys, and thanks to Nosila.

I had fun writing this. I have just bought a new bass from Paul Everson. This is a real treat - a hand made bass - and the sound is phenomenal (in fact I bought this bass right here! - Bad website, great basses.) This is the first (full) thing recorded with it.

The fantastic thing about a good bass is that you plug it in, record it, and it sits in the mix almost ready to go - no fighting with muddy lower mids and flabby bottom ends.

Solid guitar playing, and whole thing propels itself forward really nicely. Quite interesting to hear such a different production for these lyrics, too. Good choice!
