Sam (Cheesecake Mix)

Forgot about this one. Lyric's a bit rubbish (sentimental and rather cliched) but the rest isn't bad. Decent guitar solo from about 2.33. Don't know what I was trying to achieve with the extended outro. Whole thing is perhaps a little too slow and underproduced? Comments welcome, as ever.

Can't remember precisely when this was recorded - 2006 or 2007 at a guess. All guitar parts are a Strat. Bass was a Fender Precision detuned to get that low D.

For the curious - the tag is a real word. It's Welsh and means "The church of St. Mary in the hollow of white hazel trees near the rapid whirlpool by St. Tysilio's of the red cave". Apparently the longest town name in the world.

Evidently this blew the tagging system's mind. The word is: Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch. No kidding.

Longest single word name, of a town, yes. Otherwise, longest place single word name is Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu in New Zealand. Longest full name is Bangkok's proper ceremonial name: Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara Yuthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Piman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukam Prasit.

Okay, with that out of the way. I enjoyed the track greatly. Kick-ass guitar solo, nice sound on the main lick (a little bit "The Edge," but, you know...interesting and good).

Non-citable Proof.

Nice one! But an oxymoron...... M'learned friends would posit that one cannot have non-citable proof in the same way that one cannot eat one's cake and have it (to correctly state an oft-misquoted homily). BTW have you done any more tracks yet like that belter you posted a few weeks back?

It's all a bit sterile for my taste, but yeah, that's a pretty wicked solo, and the thump on the bass is awesome.

Man those instruments are seriously hot. Excellent post production my friend. Everything sounds so clean. And yes that guitar solo was very cool. Gotta love the scales.

Thanks all. Can you explain "post-production" TAI? I've no idea what that is and therefore appear to be doing it accidentally!

Post-production is the stuff you do after the actual laying down of tracks--mixing, adding effects, cleaning up the various bits--all of that stuff. The actual engineering of the whole thing.

Interesting these "stages" - I don't see it like that at all. Most of the time I start recording with just an idea and the thing either comes alive or it falls flat (to paraphrase Dylan). The writing, performing, recording, engineering, arranging, production etc all kind of melds into one.

Is this song about the Hobbits?

I'm digging the extended outro.

No, it's an existential deconstruction of the life of Samuel Pepys which, in fact, is the first movement of a ballet that I 'm confident will star a disinterred Zero Mostel as the unequalled Sam with Bette Midler as his missus. So, disappointingly, fuck-all to do with hobbits, hobbies or hobos.
