All You Need is Love Unless You Have No Food

January 3, 2010 11:01 PM

This comment in the recent Starbucks/Product Red/internet singalong thread inspired me to redo Lennon's tune just a wee bit...

Once again, the lyrics:

All you need is love
unless you have no food
then you need love and food.
Also, you need water and shelter.

I'd like to dedicate this piece to the memory of my father, Samuel W. Bennett (1925-2002) who, in 1967, upon overhearing the record playing in my room, said something uncannily similar to the quoted comment. Except that, IIRC, he included a checking account in his list of things you need.

Maslow would be so proud.

The "wah-wah-wah-wah-wah" could actually be sung using the words "and a checking account"

A lovely tribute to the world's pragmatists. Thanks.

I believe that may well be the best example of "You're a fucking idiot for not getting the point of the song" coupled with a savage bayonet thrust of derision I have ever heard. Kudos, my man. Kudos.

Dude, you have such an excellent speaking voice. Calm, soothing. Have you done any radio?

I think so too. It's got a lot of Bob Dorough in it.

Nah, ORthey, never done any radio. I've been thinking of putting some kind of demo together for maybe getting some voiceover work, but haven't gotten around to it.

Thanks for your comments, folks!

My favourite part is "hello, friends."
And I like that it sounds as though you live in the Citizen Kane mansion.

This is wonderful, and inspires me to share with you a version of Happy Birthday I recorded last October. The "goesagainstthemeaning" and "overextendedlyric" tags work well in both cases.

Wow, I appreciate this just being one track, as it really shows off the 'noises' you can make (like the perfect wah-wah-wah-wah). This seems like something that might be on Prairie Home Companion.

Ha!

Hey, this makes me wonder: when you play shows, do you chat a lot between songs?

Karlos, actually, no, I don't do much chat between songs at my shows here in Japan, but that's mostly cause I'm not that comfortable with speaking Japanese, in that way. When I've got an audience that has a decent percentage of native English speakers, I'll be a little more talky onstage, but still not all that much.

Actually flapjax my waffling on in silly Japanese was the reason we kept getting gigs. Of course you are actually awesome at music so you won't need that tactic.
