music.metafilter meetup?

music.metafilter meetup/jam/performance?

Chococat (not that it's his fault) mentioned that he'd love to see a music.metafilter meetup. This got me thinking -- why not? Especially if we could hire a stage and some sound equipment and invite the rest of MeFi. Maybe Divabat could do some burlesque?

I'm pretty sure a good time could be had, since we have the means to learn one another's songs. And a fantastic excuse to travel someplace new. Anyone got any thoughts? Toronto is my first thought since there are a few of us around, but NYC also seems like a possible, but maybe somewhere exotic would be even more fun.

Could it be combined with a wider MeFi meetup?

Sounds like a lot of fun, but travel would kill it for me. Just no extra money right now for a trip like that. Maybe multiple meetups on a single night, with audio and video fed online?

Oh man don't pin this one on me. I fear that my vision of it is a bit unrealistic and overly-romantic. Like we'd all meet at micayetoca's place in Argentina or in some old barn in the English countryside or something.
But ya, my take on it would be more of a super-casual group play-along or something with the really low-pressure possibility of recording, more than a performance, per se. I'd likely chicken out anyway.
The logistics do seem a bit tricky, though.

No sweat. I can put you all up in my place, in Tokyo.

As long as you all don't mind sleeping in a heap.

Yeah, I'm with chococat, let's all meetup in Argentina! Or Tokyo in heaps of sheep! You buy, I'll fly.

You buy, I'll fly, words to live by.

We would have to set up something like SponsorThesePoorStrandedMusiciansWhoHaveNeverHadTheChanceToPlayTogetherInOneRoom.metafilter.com and accept donations there.

It would be really cool, but I'd had to warn that there are several musicians here that if I ever get to be in the same room as them, there's no way I'm gonna resist the urge to kidnap them and bring them here to form my dream band. You'd all would make my plan a lot easier if we do meet here, come to think of it.

Coming back to subject, definitely, if Karlos the Jackal buys, I'll fly.

Lemme count my buckets of 20 Franc French Roosters and I'll see if I can swing it.

If anyone's ever in Oklahoma, you're more than welcome to join a gyrophonic meetup, most thursdays.

Why not? Wherever it may be?

At the very least, it would give me an excuse to renew my passport.

Providence is near Boston + NYC and closer to Canada than some other cities.

Plus Mulp + I are here already.

So...Yeah.

I wonder if we can get an NEA grant for this.

That is, if art hasn't been scratched from the budget.

I think this idea is worth pursuing. Certainly somebody out there on the blue has experience in grant-writing and loves us enough to contribute their expertise.

Plus, if we've got grant money behind us, that should give us an excuse to have more than just a day or two to get together and make some art.

Good luck with that - just don't expect any contribution from across the pond. What passes for our current government is hell bent on slashing public spending. I'll be fortunate if I still have a job this time next year. I daresay you'll be able to get a franchise on the Royal Family soon - don't be surprised to see Queen Lizzie appearing on a MacDonald's burger box saying "One Does Rather Enjoy A Big Mac, What?".

No chance of me getting to the US or Canada (or anywhere else not already planned) this year. The Brit contingent could, however, consider a meet-up in Blighty?? Perhaps with a live link-up to a US/Canada/Japan shindig. Actually......oh noooo, this has got me thinking....couldn't we organise a "virtual" meet-up somehow using this infernal internet contraption?? Wouldn't that just be easier and more inclusive....?

"virtual" meet-up. Isn't that how Matt, jessamyn and cortex do the podcasts? It's been a while since I've done anything like that, the last time I tried the buffer times made it impossible to actually "jam". But what do I know, do we still have buffering with skype and the like?

I most definitely can't travel, but it would be pretty awesome if we could (somehow) jam/collaborate/etc together in a live-sorta way.

I'd love to see stuff like this happen. I've thought off and on about the idea of trying to stage some sort of tiny Mefi Music Fest thing.

The obvious problem is, yeah, travel logistics and cost, though I'd like to think it'd be possible to at least do something at a regional level now and then, like a Pacific Northwest show/jam one time and another one in New England, etc. It's not as inclusive as I'd like something to be in theory, but it'd probably be doable and make for a nice little event, and we could be sure to record (and possibly stream!) the thing so that folks who can't make it can watch and enjoy.

(Imagine live streaming of the show out, and live commenting/twittering on a big projector at the event so it goes both ways. Heh.)

Beyond that, exploring ways to do not-really-an-event virtual jammery would be neat. There was discussion (if not super hopeful, as I recall) about some live remote jamming stuff in Music Talk a while back, wasn't there? I feel like the conclusion was "doing this well is hard at best", but I don't want to assume that's the case if I'm misremembering.

More random asynchronous collaboration stuff would be fun too. I've enjoyed the stuff like that that has come before, the only real challenge in anything like that is someone being willing to take the time and energy to wrangle all involved.

I'm not technically savvy about these things - but I do know that at my workplace we have video-conferencing. Seems to work reasonably well. My simple rationale is that if the chimps in charge of administration at my workplace can organise that, it should be a piece of piss (as we say this side of the pond - it means "real easy" in rough translation) for MeFites to deal with. I think it would be cool to expore this cortex - as you're well aware, not all the regular gang on MeFiMu is domicile in the USA/Canada. It may come down to something as simple as all of us downloading a piece of software to enable this to happen....

Indaba looks like it might be a nice way to organize some asynchronous collaboration. Has anyone used it?

If something ends up happening within reasonable traveling distance from Los Angeles, I'll drag my ukulele out. Perhaps less emphasis on performance and more on gathering in a place where loud sounds wouldn't be frowned upon would be the way to go. And, uh, alcohol and food are always nice.
