Open Call.

An open invitation to collaborate on a semi finished song.

The situation is this: I've had this song for several years, the thing is, when I recorded it I used a rhythm track I "programmed" by hand on a 303. It was sloppy, and it sounded bad. Then after that I haven't had the means to add a rhythm track that I liked, so I thought I could bring it here and invite anyone who might want to add drums / percussion / beats to it to do it.

It's in 85 BPM, it can be downloaded from that drop.io link. Unfortunately I don't have the source tracks anymore, so remixing it in a different order or cutting out sections is pretty much impossible. I know this is exactly the opposite of how things should be done, one should start laying the rhythm tracks first, but I just never resigned myself to letting this song die incomplete.

(on preview: what happened to the line breaks?)

oh man. when i get near a drum set I'll see what I can do for it (or get some drum VSTs going or something).

What kind of drums/perc/beats are you looking for? I might give it a shot; I could feasibly do anything from straightforward rockish to full on afro-latin. Was it the style or the quality of the sequenced drums that was the problem? If it was just the quality, might you upload the one with the sequenced rhythm, too? That would give at least a reference point.

Any way it goes, I'd love a chance for more collaboration, so I'm in.

oh, there are the line breaks

And in New Orleans, there's second line breaks.

Ahem. Um...

I love it! What a cool track! PhotoSHOP! Downloading as we speak! Will add percussion! Woot!

Fantastic, this started off in the right direction. Great news, I'd love to hear it.

You know, I think it would be really interesting to see what the song suggests to different people, so I'd like to leave that open to each person and the feel they get from the song. Anything goes.

And more than the quality of the sound or the style of the original track I used being the problem, my performance was the problem. I recorded it by hand, striking the keys of the drum machine "live" while recording, and so the timing was a bit off and it kinda killed the song. And I'd rather not show that other version for now, so that it would send people in a specific direction. I'd really like to see how different people interpret the song.

If I get a bunch of versions perhaps I can do another Talk post showing each of them and have the original version there as part of the package.

Chidisimo, flapjax, can't wait to hear that.

I have this very specific and simple idea for it that would involve me drumming really tightly, which is a more or less fictional creature at the moment but it'd be fun to try.

Doing show-and-tell with the various contributions sounds like a lot of fun. You could mix together a rough percussomix track from just the new elements, too.

Give it a shot, cortex, since it's all for the sake of exploring new things, it can't hurt, even if you feel you can't outdrum Neil Peart. I'd love to hear it.

This morning I received the first version, by Zenabi. It's completely different to what I originally did, and very, very cool. It even made me miss being in a band with non-virtual musicians.

Thank you micayetoca. I really enjoyed doing it.

I would love to hear other interpretations!
