What is this song?

What is this song?

Hey guys,

For about the last five years I've had this song stuck in my head (not continuously) and I've decided to get to the bottom of the matter once and for all.

I heard it in a club years ago, but wasn't in a position to ask the DJ what it was. It's very repetitive and is some kind of and old-school ska/northern soul song.

The vocalist is male and James Brown-ish and sings a single line over and over.

The part that has always stuck with me is the bass groove. Below is my amateurish recording of what I remember.

If any of you guys could tell me anything about this song there'd be all kinds of eternal gratitude in the offing.

I will be SHOCKED if it's not that one, peterkins. That's exactly the riff. Well done.

Holy crap, the number of times I've danced to that! It was an absolute staple at old-skool nights in London in the late 80s and early 90s.

Peterkins, that is excellent. Dave & Ansell Collins – Double Barrel.

So glad to finally have the name.

Thanks!
