Osama's Dead (So I Wrote A Funny Song)

May 2, 2011 9:28 AM

This is a song about how I feel weird about writing this song.

On the one hand, everything is material. On the other hand, it's weird that everything is material. It's hard not to be torn both ways a lot of the time; can doesn't mean should, and it's difficult sometimes to evaluate where the fulcrum is beneath the Good Idea / Bad Idea beam.

By the time I had spent more time this morning thinking about why I felt so torn by the song idea than I had either writing the song or feeling torn, I figured I should probably just drop the hammer and do it.

It's been a weird day, watching people sort of let out ten years of pent up stress about something simultaneously symbolic to the point of abstraction and plainly, brutally factual, by a hundred different odd-in-their-own-way vectors. I guess this is my own weird vector, misgivings and all.

Lyrics:

Osama's dead so I wrote a funny song
Osama's dead so I wrote a funny song
Low-hanging fruit
Like the Wizard of Oz
All witch is dead ding dong
Osama's dead so I wrote a funny song

Osama's dead so everybody look at me
Osama's dead now everybody look at me
Maybe if I
Make enough noise
I can end up on TV
Osama's dead so everybody look at me

It ain't news
That I'm craving your attention
So why not use a bloody geopolitical spectacle
To buck for twitter mentions

Osama's dead so I wrote a funny song
Osama's dead so I wrote a funny song
If you feel left out
You can pander too
So everybody sing along
Osama's dead so I wrote a funny song
Osama's dead so I wrote a funny song
Osama's dead so I wrote a funny song

This song is an outrage! I will appear on every TV network condemning this outrageous song.

Osama's dead so everybody look at me

This song is definitely trying to have it's cake and eat it too, but that right there is a fantastic line.

Okay, after five listens and actually singing along, I'll admit I like the rest of the song too.

I know, right? The moment I had the idea for the song I knew I was ethically compromised.

It's the less-mercenary-but-more-narcissistic version of the the old Onion article, "Why This Latest Tragedy Proves My Political Positions Were Right All Along"

Just like when I go out with friends tonight I'll be all like, "Check out all these hilarious jokes about Osama I read on the internet last night! I got the Osama jokes right here! Me Me Me!"
