MeFiMusic Challenge: Music By Women

April 29, 2016 10:23 AM

Your challenge, should you choose to accept it: record a song by, with or as a woman.

Well it's two months away but you've probably already seen the cards in the shops, MeFi #JulyByWomen is coming, and it's about time we jumped on that awesome bandwagon.

So, here are the rules for submissions. You have a choice:
- Record a cover of a piece written by a woman or women
- If you are a woman, record absolutely anything you like and post it
- If you are not a woman, record anything you like in collaboration with a woman and post it
- If you are genderfluid/non-binary, you can choose any of the above and rock

Post your submission before June 30th if possible, and don't forget to tag it MeFiMusicChallenge and MusicByWomen

If you're looking to do option 1 and play piano, this recent ask [from me] has a ton of possibilities in the answers.

Had to get the original tracks from the drummer who is working insane hours lately. Finally got them a few days ago, finished the remix and posted my entry this evening. Good thing we had until the end of June!

I am woefully behind on MeFi Music projects; I have at least 3 that I started and for one reason or another, have not been able to complete them yet (at least, completed well enough that I'd feel okay about posting them). I would like to post something for this one, but I honestly am not sure. I'm going to try to catch up on the backlog first and hopefully that will help lessen my guilt...

Thank you for making me laugh, greenish. :) Although I haven't participated as much as I'd like here, I wanted to give a special shout-out to you for spearheading the MeFi Music challenges and taking the time to put together the podcasts! And kudos to everyone who has participated in the challenges!

Thanks rangefinder 1.4, that's nice of you to say :) it is very much my pleasure, I love doing it!

Adding to the high fives going round to everyone who has submitted so far. The next podcast is going to be extra fun to make!

I am learning the guitar just so I can post something by the end of July. At best it will be a cover of something with three chords and so far it's very much at the My Lovely Horse level but I'm getting there. (And by "getting there" I mean "deeply distressing my neighbours".)

but I'm getting there. (And by "getting there" I mean "deeply distressing my neighbours".)

I can relate to this. Back when I was at school, I once had a room with a window that was a short way across from someone else's window. I remember my neighbor closing their window while I practiced guitar lessons, and yeah it stung a little but I recognized it was not easy to listen to, even for my ears! As time passed, I knew I'd made progress -- and it was a great feeling -- when they didn't bother to close their window. (Of course that changed when I had to learn a new piece...also I got better at remembering to close my window, too.)

Anyway, I'm rooting for you, billiebee! Once you know three chords, all you need is a capo and you'll be able to play about 90%* of all songs ever.
