Blackbird (cover) - Voice Memo Recording 24 SEP 2021

September 24, 2021 1:25 PM

Well it's been a minute since I've posted anything here. This is a "one take" cover of the Beatles song "Blackbird". Sung while playing on my old upright church piano in my living during a lunch break.

I was talking with a friend about music today. He wants to learn piano as an adult, so I was getting all excited about helping him get started and it just made me remember how much I love to sit down at the piano to sing and play. It's the perfect way to get away from all the computers and shit :)

Sometimes I'll record these sessions with my iPhone's Voice Memos app, as a sort of audio journal. A lot of it ends up being throw away material, but it's so easy to just hit record and not think about it.

Every once in a while I end up with something I like enough to share. Thanks for checking it out!

[Technical/Mixing notes for those who might be interested in that sort of thing. Of course the acoustics aren't super great, and the teensy little microphone on my iPhone can only do so much. Also it's all "one take" because I was just playing and singing and letting the recording just run. I liked how this one turned out, so I added a bit of reverb and EQ via my DAW (StudioOne, just using stock plugins) and called it a day.]

I wish I had more days like this! This sounds great.

Something very pure about just the bare piano and vocals. Awesome vocals on this one for sure.

I love your voice. The variation in timbre and texture, along with what I think is maybe a slight swing relative to the original is a nice take. Feels less upright and strident than the OG, and I like that... because the "blaaackbiird fly" part always seemed a bit forced to me.
