Nineteen Thousand Sunsets

Ambient instrumental piece. It's a rather ambient dialog between the guitar and a bell-like sine synth. Long pauses. Slow paced. Throughout my life, one of my constant joys was always watching the sun go down. I've seen so many variations of this event that I wanted to express a condensation of the variety and bittersweetness of all those sunsets. [more inside]

I’ve been recording songs on my iPad. Apps used on this one: Audiobus, Loopy, Samplr, 76 Synthesizer, Figure, and Garageband. Also, a Walden acoustic guitar and a Blue Snowball microphone.

Finding a Classical Guitar

What do I need to know to properly search for a classical guitar? I need to get rid of one of my electrics and get a decent classical guitar. [more inside] posted by snsranch at 6:16 PM PST - 4 comments

Until You Remember

It's the summer of 1990, we're in a flat at the bottom of Muswell Hill, and my friend Graham and I have just got back from the pub, so naturally we fire up the ancient 4-track reel to reel and the shiny new SR16 drum machine, and record this... the first ever song I multitracked properly. Rescued off a long-forgotten cassette. I'm sure everything was recorded with an SM58.

It's about that time....

A couple of years back we had us a time with "The Velvet Underground & Nico". Last year it was "OK Computer". This year, and as a challenge say for "summer" or "fall" (more properly "autumn" but we have to make allowances for the verbal idiosyncracies of our colonial friends) rather than a single month, may I suggest.... Way Back When (studio version)

Final version of the rough acoustic demo I posted a few days back. A bit of blue-eyed soul, a bit of BONNY era Prefab Sprout, a bit of TEMPTED era Squeeze and a few 10cc harmonies, and the guitar from Alison. Did I miss anything? [more inside]

Kiev

This is perhaps one of Ummagma's darker moments, but as the song proceeds, it lets more and more light in. There is a moral to this story, like it or not, but the soundtrack to go with it makes it that much easier to swallow. :) [more inside]

I'm My Own Worst mp3

A few weeks back I posted this, which was a bit shit. In trying to turd-polish I eventually scrapped the vocal melody and lyric, opened a mic and this came out. Whether it's any better is anyone's guess, but I do like the juxtaposition of a seemingly sunny melody etc with a sinister lyric. [more inside]

Balkanofellini

If you let your imagination drift towards southeastern Europe, somewhere wedged between Fellini's Italy and Emir Kusturica's Balkans, and then you put such wanderings into a soundtrack, this is likely what you would end up with - Balkanofellini :) [more inside]

When a band "dances" on the border between 6 or more musical genres and one of them happens to be progressive rock, the listener is often in for a delightful surprise. Hopefully this song qualifies as one of them. This is "Outside" by Ummagma. [more inside]

Possible May challenge idea - you scratch my backing track, I'll...

....have my wicked way with yours. The idea here is very simple. Upload the backing track of something you've previously posted to MeFiMu (that's not strictly necessary I guess but it sort of closes the loop) and the challenge is for anyone who fancies it to have a go at writing and recording a new top line/melody and, if you want to go the whole hog, lyric. You could of course try to use the existing lyric but with a new melody - that's even more difficult and may cause the masochists in the community to become moist. Go right ahead and swap stems if you so desire, but that's not essential for this bit of fun. Stating the bleedin' obvious: upload the result when you're done. 'andsome!
