Midnight improv
Turn off the lights, hit record and just play. [more inside]
Frostbite
I did the RPM Challenge back in February. It went okay. This is the first song, a bossa nova-type thing that came out unsettlingly close to smooth jazz. [more inside]
Unseen Ring of Fire
Another Improvisational thing from my new band Carbon 7. This one's a bit long, at 19 minutes. [more inside]
Base Three Chakra the Deadly Head
A somewhat atonal, arhythmic meditation on something, we know not what. Carbon 7 in an ongoing experiment in collaborative improvisation. [more inside]
I Remember Clifford
Why is that so many of the people that mean the most to me died before I was even born? [more inside]
I Can Dream, Can't I?
Made famous by The Andrews Sisters in 1949, here I use a beautifully understated jazz guitar version by Pizzarelli and Vignola as backing. It's been a long while since I recorded something to post, so I hope you enjoy it!
Schwankfeld's Blues
Off of my combo's demo, this is a 12 bar blues I wrote in college, the changes are a little... non-standard. [more inside]
Hymn to the Preciousness of Human Frailty
Here's a new recording I made last night. It's a song of my own composition. I feel like it's a strong interpretation, and I think my style is becoming more personal. [more inside]
The Space Between Us
(Intro edit). This is the first 6 minutes of a 25 minute improvisation that won't all fit in a 10 mb file. [more inside]
A Slight Groove
Just a little organ-bass groove with a garageband drum loop. [more inside]
Frystgh
A 59 second original jazz tune. [more inside]
Dust
Archival. Sometimes I surprise myself. Stick with it for a while - it's a grower. [more inside]
Ain't Misbehavin' (#3)
Another cover of this awesome song, which I will be playing until the day I die. I'm getting damned good at stride piano if I do say so myself.
Jazz Waltz
A study based on a tutorial in Keyboard magazine. [more inside]
On The Sunny Side Of The Street
I am tired of having a cold. I miss singing too much. And I was thinking... gravelly voices are cool, right? So I finally gave in to the urge; here's me singing and playing my old organ on the old standard by Jimmy McHugh and Dorothy Fields. One take, no mixing, all the crap left in just like I like it. Pretty sloppy, but at least it's got character.
song for Jasper
Two dear friends of mine recently had their first child. This is the emotional piano solo I recorded in celebration. I think it's kind of reminiscent of Keith Jarrett.
Blue Sketch #1
A demo of a composition of my own I'm working on. If you've got ideas on direction or structure or whatever, comments are welcome. [more inside]
My Funny Valentine
That's What I'll Do (For You)
A humorous little jazz number about humans that are in love with their pets. Part of a continuing New Year's Day song project I already posted to MeFi Projects. [more inside]
Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas
An arrangement for solo electric guitar.
20202020
The first track finished in my NaSoAlMo/hometpng efforts. Long live November! [more inside]
MelancholyReed
improvised jazz solo on accordion. Turned in for college credit as a melody exercise. [more inside]
Säkkijärven Polkka
An improvisational rendition of the classic Finnish folk tune on piano and bass, folk jazz style. [more inside]
Misty
I recorded this for a dear old friend who'd requested it; it has myself playing a really trashy old guitar and my wheezy accordion and singing. Yes, it's senselessly sentimental, but there's something sweet about it. [more inside]
Thaumaturgis
Jazzsick
Mel Torme in hell. What started out as a tribute to Norwegian improv giants Supersilent became an outtake from Zappa's Lumpy Gravy. Kinda...
Solitude
It took Duke Ellington fifteen minutes to write this song, but it only took me four and a half to tear it apart. [more inside]
trio no 6
a free improvisation - trumpet, double bass and percussion. slightly groovy near the end. sort of. [more inside]
My Funny Valentine
I wasn't able to take lessons like I planned, but I thought I'd post my take on the classic Rodgers and Hart song anyway, after a long hiatus. Hope you enjoy! [more inside]
graffiti song
old/well-loved song. been meaning to throw this up for a while. jazzy ditty about the internetty world. needs a competent brass bit if anyone's interested. [more inside]
East Of The Sun West Of The Moon
This is a cover of the jazz standard. I sing and play upright bass, and have a buddy on guitar. [more inside]
Danny Steel - Private Eye
My new year resolutions included playing more guitar, playing with other people and ceasing writing rubbish songs - this affectionate pastiche of film noir and the work of a couple of old heavy rollers ticks at least a couple of those boxes. With apologies to Don and Walt. [more inside]
HAPPY HOUR CAN LAST ALL NIGHT (Instrumental)
A little bit of Jazz topped with a few blues riffs on a funky little plate placed on a table of natural ambiance. [more inside]
My Sister the Giant
I'm doing an album this month, and this is the first thing I've recorded for it. I think the album will be mostly or completely instrumental, but we'll see. [more inside]
Workshy
An abstract and impressionistic take on the wonderful world of work. Or something like that. Whatever. Listening to it afresh from the distance of several years, I've no idea what the fuck I'm banging on about here. I was probably stoned out of my box at the time. Disgarceful behaviour for a doctor - tsk tsk. Another extract from the extensive but wholly disreputable Dundee Archive. NB: this product contains faint traces of jazz-lite.....
Tubbs' Tune (seed)
This is a modest little theme recorded (badly) way back when that could be taken by a jazz combo and used as a blowing vehicle - it could be stretched out, modulated and pulled around at will. It's no more than a sketch really - but that's all it needs to be. If there are any jazzers amongst the community who want to use it - be my guest. Dedicated to the late, great Brit saxophonist Tubby Hayes.
Desafinado (English Lyrics)
Just dashed this off on another computer for some Brazilian lady friends, thought some on MeMu might enjoy...a little rough, but it fits! Piano by David Beebee. [more inside]
Suenos
Recorded a couple of years back, this was inspired by a visit to the house of the late composer Manuel De Falla in Granada, Spain (a wonderful city). At the risk of immodesty this one has some of the best "lead" acoustic guitar playing I've recorded to date. For those with no Spanish "suenos" translates as "dreams" [more inside]
Femme Fatale
Skeedly Scoodly doo-bee a-scoo-boop WHOA ba-deedly doot-'n doo-wow. [more inside]
Brubekujah
Stealing the 5/4 shuffle from Take Five and injecting it into Leonard Cohen: non-trivial. [more inside]
Last Orders (aka Tom Waits For No Man)
Another one from an acoustic-based set recorded some time ago now. A giant cliche in a way, I suppose - but it has a kind of addled charm... [more inside]
Too Blue
"This was an improvisation, actually the second take (Blue 2, or "Too Blue"), during which I had the memory of the Monterey Jazz festival firmly planted in my head, remembering the incredible musicians and music I heard all over the fairgrounds, playing jazz, soul, and lots 'n lots of blues…" ~ Laurie Z.
Take Five Take Two
I posted a playalong for Take Five which I recorded a little while back. This is me playing along. I'm kind of new to the sax. [more inside]
Take Five
Since I recently started learning alto sax, I've been trying to learn the well known Paul Desmond standard Take Five, but don't have a playalong for it. So tonight I made one. This is it. [more inside]
Late Thaw
I'm neither a jazz writer nor a jazz singer, but that didn't stop me from trying. It's part of an album I'm gradually releasing online. [more inside]
Tea For Two
Lately I've been in a mood to sing vintage romantic standards in a very straight up way. Some day I want to do a version of this song inspired by Anita O'Day. This ain't it. You can still feel free to dance, though! [more inside]
How Long Has This Been Going On
Rehearsing some totally new Gershwin torch songs.
Well, not new for the Gershwins. They're pretty dead. New for me, though. :) [more inside]
Circus
Bare bones demo of a song I'm working on about the circus. Thoughts would be appreciated.
stopping by woods
Back in either middle school or high school, in music class, I wrote my very first melody with a classmate named Mathias Knutzen. The assignment was to take a text from one of our books and create a song with it. We chose Robert Frost's poem and came up with this pseudo-jazzy tune. I always liked it, so I kept the "digital chord sheet" around and played it from time to time. More than 15 years later, here now is a brand new recorded version -- complete with brushed drums and falsetto background vocals. [more inside]
Damn The Man
A quick demo I recorded last Thurs/Fri. Slow building, pretty layered guitar & tom tom-driven indie-jazz type stuff. [more inside]
