Burnside

Another live recording from my new band, Medicine Bone (previously). This is one of band-mate Ken Shima's songs, which he's singing here. I'm on walking drums. I love drumming to this tune. Video of this same performance on YouTube.

Sitting On Top of the World

This is my other brand new band, the Ghost Steppers. We do old-time, early blues, jug band, mountain music: all traditional stuff, no originals. Here's our rough-and-ready take on an old favorite, originally written and recorded by the Mississippi Sheiks, that's been interpreted by many, many folks over the years. I've changed the lyrics a bit (maybe more than a bit) but that's part of the longstanding folk tradition, of course. Video of this same performance at YouTube here.

Shangri-La (Live Bootleg Cut)

This is a live recording of my new song Shangri-La. The audio was recorded on a handheld recorder by one of the audience members. Apologies for the dodgy sound quality...but I just had to post my first bootleg! [more inside]

I'm Worried About You

Here's my new band, Medicine Bone, from our official first gig at Velvet Sun in Ogikubo, Tokyo, February 27, 2010. Ken Shima is on guitar, and sings plenty of his own tunes in the band too: it's a collaborative effort. This is one of my tunes, though, a blues. Video of this same performance at YouTube. Last Train (live)

Another live recording from the opening hours of January 1, 2010, coming at you from deepest Shimokitazawa, Tokyo. I'm playing the Dan Moi (Vietnamese jaw harp) here, and singing about the all-too-common concern of Tokyoites: missing that saishuu densha. Video of this same performance at YouTube or Vimeo

Oh Death (live)

In the very first hour of the brand new year of 2010, I was on a stage in Tokyo, part of Mike Watt's yearly "We Jam Econo" event, singing about death. Video of this same performance can be seen at YouTube or Vimeo. [more inside]

Hole In My Wallet

This is a live recording straight from the desk at my band's most recent show. The song is basically about how work sucks so you spend your pay on booze to forget about it and have a good time. Deep, right? More tracks on our myspace.

i will (radiohead cover)

Spur-of-the-moment lo-fi live cover of the Radiohead song off Hail to the Thief, to which I added a couple of equally rough overdubs and some reverb. The guitar is out of tune and poorly played, but the vocal melody tweaks are kind of fun. [more inside]

Piano piano piano

I think this is a pretty fun riff/song. Using a piano, loop pedal, and recording on my laptop Critique the hell out of it, as usual. (And, yes, I'm technically no pianist.) Any suggestions about how to 'flesh it out' would be welcome, too!

Superbole

Classical music meets instrumental tango salsa rock. Live recording from the Ohio Action benefit show, October, Kenyon College. I took the solo on this track, replacing vocals with a violin "guest vocalist."

FERB

FERB - 'Funky Electronic Rhythm n' Blues' is a little blues track I wrote and performed for a small class gig we did last year for the sake of putting on a show and having some random musical collaborations. I'd classify this as the first gig I ever did but fortunately I had some incredibly talented guys in the band to make me sound good!

We Have the Technology

My band recorded this for a Song Fight. It's quirky casio acuostic rock, with just a hint of out of tune accordion, and percussion supplied by a djembe. That's me singing.

The New One

This is my former band, Heat Lorraine. I'm lead guitar on this track. We had broken up already when we played this show. There was a lot of resentment floating around. We'd all had a few drinks before we went on, but our lead singer (and rhythm guitarist) Brian was drinking with a vengence.

Community Noise

Members of the public were invited to bring a non-musical object to a drop-in recording session. We recorded them making a noise with their thing ('things' included carrots, an umbrella, false teeth, keys, photoflash, adding machine, pints of beer), and then the next day I did an improvised gig using only the collected sounds as source material. This is an excerpt from the gig.
