I wrote this song about you
This song is a very hard song to discribe. Seeing that we dont really know each other I feel I can blurt out the real meaning here of this song in this forum so to speak. Its very personal song. My daughter got her self pregnant and she wasnt ready. I pleaded please have the baby we can work through this it will be ok. I thought she was going to be with me in this and my wishes. We were on good terms and our relationship was that of divorse myself in Mi and her in Tx even though I was in her life I wasnt there as much as I should have been. Anyway we talked of this and then for some reason she cut me out. I called and I called and I called my X wife, she was on the was to Dallas with no phone to get a abortion. I had no way to stop her. This was my first grandchild being ripped out of my life. It happened I cant change that. That nite I sat down in a chair and spit out these words. Its all I have let to remind me that my grand child was. They killed a part of me that day. Im in more contact and still love my daughter very very much. We all make mistakes and bad choices. Anyway I wrote this song about you where ever you may be. Maybe sitting on my lap right now and I dont even know it. My daughter has not heard this.
Water
This song came at a very strange and weird time. Ill shorten her up abit story wise. I was in a accident good while back now fully recovered now. I was doing Christmas music for family and friends who helped in my complete recovery. Now a painted picture. I had a broken jaw rippied off the tip of my nose and knocked out 9 teeth. Bike accident ouch. Again fully recovered and happy to be here still. So where this song came from I dont know but the timing was in the middle of christmas recording. I ran with it anyway cause I hadnt really ever did wording like this and the song poured out. Anyway that set the strange stage for Water. I hear some Willie in there somewhere. LIsten
In The Bar Tonight
This was a happiely done shes gone song. When I first wrote it I thought to myself " If she hears this then shell know and we will be ok again" Needless to say she is still gone and all I got was this dam T-shirt. This was my first and only studio demo session in where I did my first three recorded songs. Sorry for the song restart at the end just me being lazy on a edit. Listen
Ps: as the story goes she has heard this one I know for sure
casanova ruins
I was walking around in the garment district at night on valentine's day years ago, and spotted a beautiful woman walking alone across the street. Despite being glamorously dressed up, she looked like she had lost all faith in men. She was carrying a heart-shaped balloon and huge flowers. This song is sort of about that. [more inside]
One Kiss from You
A maudlin love song from an old man to a young woman. Written in 2001. Part of my Old Songs project. [more inside]
I went Looking for the lord one day
A song about a time in my life when I hit a cross road. I happy to report I still have my soul as it wasnt ever for sale.
You know Id choose you again
Just a tune about a turning point in my life. I loved this women more than myself. I felt the presence of the man upstairs and was inspired to take another path.
Tiffiney
She dialed my number by mistake and left a kinda wild message. She called back a few times looking for someone else. I wrote this song just cause she had a nice voice. The calls stopped I never met her or spoke to her again.
Woe Is Me
Part of my quickly growing Old Songs collection, in which I record songs I wrote many years and even decades ago. This is a somewhat scandalous song about unrequited love. [more inside]
This Dream of Love
Another in my collection of Old Songs, in which I record lo-fi versions of song written many years and, in some cases, decades ago. [more inside]
Passionate Surrender
More three part solo. This time even the melody is improvised. The lyrics are a poem that caught my eye online. (link inside) [more inside]
Love More
Title song from my self-produced record last year. [more inside]
hospital walls
Guitar-based melancholy song with vocals. I've had this around for several years, and keep thinking I'll continue to dabble with the outro. I think it's time to just let it out. I wrote this after the breakup of a 7 year relationship. I like the lyrics, and the little solo, and many other things about it. The long fade-out ending is over-indulgent and a bit off-key, but imperfect as the song may be, it has heart.
Pocket Venus
A not-so-tall song about a short, sweet object of desire. Wait, can I try that again? [more inside]
gone
I think this is one of the catchier songs I've come up with in a while, though I never seem to be a good judge of that. At any rate, it's a short and simple track about intense love gone missing... or something like that. [more inside]
Good Morning Cadets
I Love You
A little improv ambient electronic jam I made last night that was definitely influenced by herbs. [more inside]
the end
A "drifty" and atmospheric song about life and death and love, complete with harp. [more inside]
My Secret Love
Sorry I can't say who you are, but you know I love you darlin'.
The Imlovence (of My Heart)
I had promised Sarah I would write her a song. Granted, that was while we were dating. We're not anymore. But I did promise, and she is a superly awesome person, wholly deserving of a song. The chorus comes from a facecloth we found in a dollar store, and it's words, three of which being nonexistent, can be found within the bowels of this music post.
you've been awake
Lyrically naughty, musically atmospheric. Features guitars, vocals, brushed drums, African thumb harp, clothes hangers, and a shy half of a fake symphony orchestra.
Cool
Another minimalist lyric from ancient history. About a girl who's reactions to me were not as warm as I would have liked. The lingering moment or two of Leonard Cohen is a recording artifact from recycling media. Ah, the four track days.
She's Not Thinking About You
A glum, minimalist tune about the feeling you get when you're sure that all the thought you are putting into that special someone is not being returned
Complicated
This song showed up in the middle of a very stoned 45 minute jam session with my band The Next, for which I play the drums. None of us remember making this song. It's kinda fun and catchy.
Power of Love
Thanks to two class cancellations due to ice storms in the Capital, I was able to arrange and record this Valentine's day treat. Imagine Huey Lewis, baritone, with a banjo.
wedding song
Piano-based song written for my wife, for our recent wedding. As usual with my songs, it's slow and sparse. A lot of vocal layering going on, and some electric guitar to round things out in the chorus. Enjoy!
You Stole My Heart
Here's a little thing I whipped up in a couple of hours one night earlier this week. Given the amount of time I spent on it, I think it turned out pretty well, despite my voice. The chorus was stolen from another song I was (am?) writing which is based loosely on an episode of Doctor Who. The rest of the lyrics were written in about 15 minutes. I never got around to the bass, and I lost the final drum song program I put in when I stupidly yanked the SD card out too quick, but I doubt I'll ever get to putting these in, so here it is.
bench song
A happy song about new love and late summer nights. I'm not sure that the arrangement for this is done, really, but I've been leaving it alone for a while now. Features keyboards, bass, drums, slide guitar and vocals.
all this blue
Trip hop or something. At its core it is still a singer/songwriter sort of deal, but this features -- in addition to regular vocals -- opera samples, moaning girls, reversed strings, synth bass, subtle sustained guitar feedback, scratching, acoustic slide guitar, tambourine, crumbly noises, and whatever else. Includes the F-word right at the start, if that concerns anyone.
maroon for red
A song from a couple of years back which is still a favorite of mine. This one has heavier drums and more electric guitars than most of my tracks, but it's still a love song.
Salt of Your Skin
sultry love number in the Phrygian mode, with oboe d'amore, pedal steel, and vibes
Bush and Koizumi Visit Graceland
Electropop with shades of Postal Service. Diplomacy in action, a-thankyaverymuch.
sleep fiction
A pretty catchy melody, I think -- starts slow like most of my songs, but then picks up and becomes more of a rock track. Sample lyric: "Sleeping with you is still fiction, so missing it must be a contradiction." Features vocals, guitars, piano, drums, strings.
say goodnight
The city outside your bedroom window doesn't care if you're lonely. I guess this song is about the feeling of hopelessness. Slightly more uptempo than my previously posted songs, this one features slide guitar, non-slide guitars, drums, piano, strings, and guest appearances by Riadsala (bass) and kerry and casio (background vocal).
the long lost light
A slow and sad song I wrote and recorded after a breakup/separation a few years ago. Features a falsetto chorus and acoustic guitar, including an e-bow undercurrent.
the Clockmaker's Daughter -- by the Notes and Scratches
Another song from our record, it's a quiet sad folky love song. I'm singing and playing the acoustic guitar.
