Summer Follows Redux
Impossible Bookings is a collaboration I kinda sorta foisted upon cicadaverse, who initially posted the instrumental version of this track 6 months ago. I put words to what he'd created, we each reworked what we had into shorter form, he remixed my vocals and added to the instrumentation...then life happened to us both. We caught up recently after a few months off, remastered it, and called it good. [more inside]
Sredni Vashtar - Epic
Not a cover of the Faith No More song. Oh no. [more inside]

Titry / Live and Let Die
Let's throw in a juxtaposition in sonic terms just for the sake of diversity. Here is a free download of Ummagma 'Titry', alongside one right here for 'Live and Let Die'.
The first is an instrumental folky track somewhat like Peter, Bjorn and John's 'Young Folks' crossed with Tortoise (with their more upbeat side of postrock).
The second is also upbeat in the best shoegazey dreamy fashion - but with ethereal yet solid vocals... Enjoy both :) [more inside]
White Light Music Night
We finally got around to re-recording White Light Music Night. The original version is here. [more inside]
Slow see
A song by Bummed, a shoegaze-influenced band my friends and I have been working on. I'm on vocals! [more inside]
Back To You
Sonic Youth has been a big influence on many modern-day bands and Ummagma is definitely one of them, as is evident from one listen to "Back to You". The hazy gazey sounds here build into a kind of intentional dreamscape. [more inside]
Lama (Jane Woodman Remix)
When a musician, who has self-recorded and mixed everything (brilliant) he (she) has ever put out, eventually takes to creating a remix, the output can be somewhat spectacular. That is what happened when San Francisco shoegaze darkwave wonderkind Jane Woodman jumped into her very first remix for Ummagma 'Lama'. Hope you enjoy the output.
Lama
I think many people are innately inventive and many are even thrifty. When you combine the two elements with a worthy musical piece, it's amazing how many different kinds of incarnations that you can dream up for it, taking on a life of its own, so to speak. But when you start comparing one remix against another, sometimes lines tend to blur and it becomes more challenging to distinguish what has been taken from the original version and what has been newly added. It's at that point that I always end up returning to the original. This 'Lama' is that original track - a point of reference now and especially at the time it was written.
Back To You
In the spirit of "Superstar" by legendary art-punk band Sonic Youth (who were covering The Carpenters chart-breaking track), here is 'Back to You'. Sonically similar, but content-wise very different. No superstar imagery from the perspective of a groupie here. Just some self-searching and hopefully grounding elements. [more inside]
Talk To Her
Sometimes a song's strength lies in its lyrics or in the nuances of the vocalist's delivery and tembre… Sometimes the instrumentation speaks volumes all on its own. This is one of those times… This is Ummagma. [more inside]
Lama
This is one of the better (at least one of the favourite) Ummagma tracks out there to date and currently the subject of a whack of forthcoming remixes. Stay tuned! [more inside]
Lama (Dunaewsky 69 remix)
I love it when one talented artist can take the work of another talented artist, creatively metabolize it, and then craft output that is impressive in it's own right. This remix takes a quirky electro approach to Ummagma's track 'Lama'. Hope you enjoy it. [more inside]
Kiev
Ethereal wave is what they call this genre, but you can definitely sense elements of early 4AD-era postpunk, darkwave, shoegaze and postpunk here. The mood is a bit heavier and there is an outpouring of philosophy, moral and emotional reaction. Enjoy! [more inside]
NIMBY (Not In My Backyard)
Perhaps the most Cocteau Twins' inspired song by Ummagma to date, this song also features a strong pulse-driven effect inspired by Pink Floyd. Need I say more?
Theme 1 Stage 3
I once herd the term "sound track for angels" and having Lisa Von H on vocals has certainly brought a sound track to reality!
Live and Let Die
If you ever thought that there was no place for a little drum n' bass in the world of shoegaze and dreampop, hopefully this song will prove you wrong :) Somewhat of a feel like Stereolab, Broadcast and Lush rolled into one. [more inside]
Astronomical Summer 2
The pulsing drive of this tune unquestionably has a swaying effect and, taken together with this song's layers and subtleties seems to make all the difference. Sway sway sway!!! [more inside]
Kiev
This is perhaps one of Ummagma's darker moments, but as the song proceeds, it lets more and more light in. There is a moral to this story, like it or not, but the soundtrack to go with it makes it that much easier to swallow. :) [more inside]
Human Factor
Imagine a carefree diva singing in a non-chalent way as she looks out the window of the passenger side during a road trip. The soundtrack to her ride is based on an indie rock slide-guitar laced tune, which builds in intensity throughout the ride until bang - confusion and collision. That is this Ummagma song in a nutshell, message and all. [more inside]
Colors
Smooth dreaming and a swirl of energy-filled ethereal waves take the listener on a flight or sailing trip of sorts. The lo-fi nearly Billy Bragg element of this lo-fi output gets a bit velvety with vocals from Alexx Kretov and blissed out with all this chorus and reverb and that is exactly what was intended with this track. Enjoy!
Motoroller
The smooth fusion of dream pop and shoegaze is always something I welcome and a goal that is always in sight in the case of this song by Sounds of Sputnik - perhaps this is what is meant by the term nugaze - somewhat of a reshaping of the heavier dirtier shoegaze sounds dating back to the early 1990s a la My Bloody Valentine and Medicine. This reminds of of some of Kevin Shields' lighter work that he's done for various soundtracks.
How do you see it?
The Mission
Space rock is a term that is often over-used for various psychrock tunes, but it is dead on for this track from Sounds of Sputnik. Or space post-rock or even space post-rock shoegaze. Looking forward to your take on that.
Photographer
Whispy male vocals and plenty of air for dream-weaving delicately frame this ethereal song. While "Photographer" is one of Ummagma's more melancholy songs, it's far from depressing. This one stands in the light.
Features male vocals by Alexx Kretov (Ukraine).
J.S. Bach
Inspired by the great man himself - J.S. Bach - this song presents a modern interpretation, stemming into interpretation, of this great piece. By Ummagma [more inside]
NIMBY
The ethereal with the ethical and ironic - that sums this sum up at the superficial plane, but there is so much more depth to this Ummagma track. Definitely one of the more Cocteau Twins inspired deliveries, this song is laced with a pulsation more rooted in Pink Floyd. Another track in the style of early 4AD. Whirrrrrllll.. [more inside]
Rotation
For some of the best things in life, intensity builds as anticipation kicks in. That is what this Ummagma track is for me - with layer on layer, building a sort of icicle/sand castle that never melts or washes away. It just builds and then takes flight. I hope you will feel the same.
Of course, there is that The Smiths thing happening - happy music, depressing lyrics. Rightly so. Spot on - have a read. [more inside]
Lama (Ian Baird Remix)
A while back, Ian Baird (A*Star, Spring Clock Wonder) did an awesome remix of Telling You (T.Y. Ian Baird Remix) by SPC ECO, Dean Garcia's main musical project since leaving Curve. Fortunately, he would eventually remix our song "Lama" by our duo Ummagma. Hope you enjoy this upbeat track.
Lama (Jane Woodman Remix)
This remix of the track "Lama" does not outright flip the original version on its head, though it does dress it in a murkier shade of darkgaze (darkwave). The bright dreamy element from the original version spills over into this version too, so as to not detract from the original point of this song in the first place. I hope you enjoy it. Your feedback is most welcome.
Lama
A love for the golden 4AD era, Pink Floyd and the likes of David Sylvian have all been woven into the thread of this music. "Lama" was both inspired by these bands and reflects their contribution to a new generation of musicmakers. Looking forward, but knowing where our roots lie… I sincerely hope you will all enjoy this Ummagma track. [more inside]
Risky
It's funny how sometimes it takes all but a few minutes to write a song, while the development of another song can really stretch out. This was one of those stretches - "Risky" was a song that was written "in chunks" - the basic instrumental bit was written in Kyiv, Ukraine before a big move to western Ukraine and then to Canada, where the rest was written & recorded before finally being dragged back to Ukraine, where it was properly mixed and mastered. The time span from start to finish: 5 years. All that moving around was us, by the way, not just the tracks bouncing around in cyber space. Thus is the history of this track. I'm posting the lyrics too if anyone wants to have a go at them or "sing along" …. yeah, right… any feedback is welcome. Peace. [more inside]
