The Alphabet Song

A strummy, easy-going version of the alphabet song as I sing it to my 3-year-old son. Not the standard melody. [more inside]

Man of Constant Sorrow

Standard bluegrass ala The Soggy-Bottom Boys. I thought the song might be cool if I darkened it up a bit. It began life as a 12-string and vocal live track, then I flew in some harmonies, extra guitars and bass. This was recorded in my living room on a cheap laptop. I'm not a guitar player or singer. Enjoy!

8 More Miles to Louisville

More "americana" from that woodshed in Sweden. Recorded on a battered radio/cassette player in 1984(?) so its low fi. We called ourselves The Early Puritans on the occasions we actually got paid for a gig. [more inside]

Spanish Moss

The proverbial seeds of this song were planted when I visited Savannah, Georgia at the beginning of the month and found myself captivated by the ubiquitous plant life named in the title. Later, when I was working on lyrics and couldn't think of a second verse, my bandmate Mel reminded me of a dream my friend Kathy had in which I killed a guy and hid him behind a couch. The end result may be disproportionately creepy, but I rather like it. [more inside]

Back To Being Me

Maybe I wrote this song for Aretha Franklin. Maybe I wrote it for Candi Staton. Either way, when I sing it I feel like a large black woman.

Mrs McGrath

More of the woes caused by foreign wars in this song from the woodshed tape (Sweden 1984.) "By heaven I'll make them rue the day when they took the legs from a child of mine" The Early Puritans at it again with an Irish song. Singer Dave Scott is Irish. Other singer Jim Donovan though is american [more inside]

For a' that

An old song. Written by Robert burns in 1795. Recorded by my old acoustic band, The Early Puritans in Sweden 1984 on a radio/cassette player with built in microphones. One take. Found the tape in the woodshed this summer. Lo fi. [more inside]

I Like The Music [slightly NSFW lyrics]

A song written and recorded on my Tascam Porta-05 sometime around 1992-3. I've slowed it down about 25% to give it a more lazy feel. Mostly about music and how I feel about it. [more inside]

Leadlined

Title still feels like a placeholder; waiting there for the proper, more apt one to make itself known. Apart from that it's another cornucopia of sameness just like the other stuff. Boogie shoes not required.

Sift

Kind of a break from recording and re-recording songs to be played live this year, this is kind of a folksy, reverb and acoustic-heavy, simple and short composition. Harmonizing my vocals is such a bummer lately, since it reveals how limited one's range is... [more inside]

Tip Your Hat

A song I wrote back in 1996. Its lyrics draw from images from the Mexican Day of the Dead, which I've always fancied. In particular, I like the small clay dioramas that show scenes of skeletons going about daily activities, such as getting haircuts or riding in cars, and it is those images that fueled this song.
