I Have A Window
Electro-acoustic piece with piano, guitar and synths that started out as an idea to write a "palindromic" song. [more inside]
Dammit: Reprise
A revision of my earlier version of this cover, since I had a night to burn at school. Bigger, a bit less background noise, a little more banjo.
The Alphabet Song
A strummy, easy-going version of the alphabet song as I sing it to my 3-year-old son. Not the standard melody. [more inside]
Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas
I recorded this version of the old Christmas standard with the original, depressing-as-hell lyrics. Check out this FPP for the backstory. [more inside]
Silent Night
Silent Night with acoustic guitar, ukulele, and 4 part vocals. [more inside]
Man of Constant Sorrow
Standard bluegrass ala The Soggy-Bottom Boys. I thought the song might be cool if I darkened it up a bit. It began life as a 12-string and vocal live track, then I flew in some harmonies, extra guitars and bass. This was recorded in my living room on a cheap laptop. I'm not a guitar player or singer. Enjoy!
Crazy
A relaxed, front-porch take on the Gnarls Barkley original. [more inside]
alberta winter blues
americans have their desks, canadians have their cold. [more inside]
Here Comes a Regular
a Replacements cover. For jonmc, I guess. My favorite 'mats song
Touching
Instrumental classical guitar, in a laid back pop style. [more inside]
Our Age (Constantines cover)
Its been too long since I've last posted here. I've been a big fan of the Constantines since the time the Arcade Fire were opening for them. This is a cover of a song off of their new album. [more inside]
My Little Corner of the World
As requested by chococat, and featuring the great Karlos The Jackal on marimba and toy piano. [more inside]
Verging
A moody, layered acoustic number with my wannabe Iron & Wine vocals.
For Sunni
Not a breakup song, but a relationship-on-hold song. [more inside]
Nude (Radiohead cover)
I was surprised to find I'd never posted this to MeFi Music. Yet another Radiohead cover by me and my friend Mel. On MySpace we are Minor Vine. [more inside]
That's Easy For You To Say
My submission to the "a song sung in a language you don't speak" challenge. [more inside]
8 More Miles to Louisville
More "americana" from that woodshed in Sweden.
Recorded on a battered radio/cassette player in 1984(?) so its low fi.
We called ourselves The Early Puritans on the occasions we actually got paid for a gig. [more inside]
7 Places
Another Ran/Run tune. This time abit more melancholy, with some nice strings.
Lights Upon Us
This is the first song off my album I just finished recording. I guess it's very folk-like.
Purepechazz
a demo. [more inside]
Peach picking time in Georgia
More from the woodshed
Jimmy Rogers we liked.
The Early Puritans go country. [more inside]
Spanish Moss
The proverbial seeds of this song were planted when I visited Savannah, Georgia at the beginning of the month and found myself captivated by the ubiquitous plant life named in the title.
Later, when I was working on lyrics and couldn't think of a second verse, my bandmate Mel reminded me of a dream my friend Kathy had in which I killed a guy and hid him behind a couch. The end result may be disproportionately creepy, but I rather like it. [more inside]
Back To Being Me
Maybe I wrote this song for Aretha Franklin. Maybe I wrote it for Candi Staton. Either way, when I sing it I feel like a large black woman.
Mrs McGrath
More of the woes caused by foreign wars in this song from the woodshed tape (Sweden 1984.)
"By heaven I'll make them rue the day when they took the legs from a child of mine"
The Early Puritans at it again with an Irish song. Singer Dave Scott is Irish. Other singer Jim Donovan though is american [more inside]
Rake
Jim Donovan, one of the members of The Early Puritans borrowed somebodys mandolin for the weekend. This is another song from that 1984 woodshed tape. [more inside]
Bonny Light Horseman
Another song from that Swedish woodshed tape.
This I dont know the origin of. But the sentiments again appealed to us. The pain caused by Foreign Wars. Still relevant? [more inside]
For a' that
An old song. Written by Robert burns in 1795.
Recorded by my old acoustic band, The Early Puritans in Sweden 1984 on a radio/cassette player with built in microphones. One take.
Found the tape in the woodshed this summer.
Lo fi. [more inside]
Wish You Were Here (cover)
Some acoustic Pink Floyd. This is my first ever recording, feedback is appreciated. [more inside]
'Til We're Dead (EP version)
Rerecorded version of "'Til We're Dead" from my forthcoming EP. [more inside]
Certain Death
A cheery song off my new album Out of It.
Here
This song has a feel I haven't easily been able to reproduce since recording it. I can barely play the song live. Despite some horrific essing, probably my favorite home recording.
P.S. I Am The Cat
Just a song I came up with and then recorded myself.
I Like The Music [slightly NSFW lyrics]
A song written and recorded on my Tascam Porta-05 sometime around 1992-3. I've slowed it down about 25% to give it a more lazy feel. Mostly about music and how I feel about it. [more inside]
You Promised
It's about those times when you realize the only one you can change is yourself. A new pop/rock tune I just released today. [more inside]
Morning Anger
I am a morning person. My girlfriend, not so much. [more inside]
she's sleeping
Mistress Song
I played a gig last week with a violin player and a bassist and they recorded it. This is one of the tunes. [more inside]
Not Enough to Keep Me Satisfied
I wrote a country song awhile back but never got around to figuring out how it should end. The latest Mefi Music Challenge provided suitable inspiration. [more inside]
Seven Shades of Blue
Another song recorded live at the cabin for the album. [more inside]
Leadlined
Title still feels like a placeholder; waiting there for the proper, more apt one to make itself known.
Apart from that it's another cornucopia of sameness just like the other stuff. Boogie shoes not required.
Whispers
Part of the unofficial internal mic mefi challenge. A song about a car accident outside my apartment building and the people that come to watch. [more inside]
The Ballad of Daisy and Jay
I've always loved The Great Gatsby - it, and F. Scott Fitzgerald, have some significance here in Minnesota. I tried to get some personal elements into the characters for this. [more inside]
Sift
Kind of a break from recording and re-recording songs to be played live this year, this is kind of a folksy, reverb and acoustic-heavy, simple and short composition. Harmonizing my vocals is such a bummer lately, since it reveals how limited one's range is... [more inside]
Jonathan's Things
An early song; back when all I needed was an intriguing title to enable me to create something. Ah yes, the good old days.
Gideon (MMJ cover)
Quick solo acoustic cover of the My Morning jacket song. [more inside]
Don't Talk To The Cops
Inspired by the recent MeFi post. Also, first song upload. Hi!
Roads of Plenty
My attempt at the Metafilter lyric challenge [more inside]
Undercover
Recorded this song last night. It's a new direction, sort of. Unplugged electric bass, acoustic guitar, vocals. 7/4 but unusual rhythm work. I like it, hope you do.
Acoustic Fragment
Fingerpicking on my camping guitar; a song I wrote 30 years ago. Sorry for the lofi recording--I just played it into my laptop. [more inside]
cc'ed
Another acoustic, instrumental tune. This is the first track I've made in GarageBand (my Ubuntu machine died hard last week).
