This is a really rough early home studio demo of a song in development for my new recording project, The Wishing Well Divers' "Tragicomic Americana." Ironically, just as I've been working on this song, which thematically concerns stigmitization and marginalization, and well, being face down on the floor, I had a health scare last night that left me literally face down on the bathroom floor for a half hour. I've got no job, health insurance, family support, or cash cushion right now, so this song has taken on new personal meanings for me just since I started recording it a couple of days ago, with new worries about health problems and their potential to make it harder to find work and insurance. Some of the most inspiring music out there focuses on the positive elements of humankind and society, blah blah blah. But there comes a time when even musicians' gearing towards that tendency get fed up and write something outside of their 'regular' thematic 'boundaries'. There is one thing that I really admire in certain artists and that is flexibility. I love it when a band can perform across a spectrum of genres and especially when they manage to pull it off well. Starting out with Ummagma's Balkanofellini, which seems appropriately named when you envision those awesome soundtracks to all of Federico Fellini's films (by Nino Rota), combined with all the Balkan eclecticism of Emir Kusturica's films (soundtrack by Goran Bregović). Eastern European countries are home to remarkably sounding native folk music, and it is particularly welcome when any element, or even remnant, of that is mixed in with any form modern music. What a grande fusion it can be. That is what we feel happened with this song.
Actors are always celebrated for their chameleonic ability to change characters and roles. Ummagma possesses this quality, among a small number of shape-shifting bands currently out there. This song is very different from anything else created by Ummagma. Hope you enjoy this. [more inside]

The lyrics to this Ummagma song seem very timely considering what is happening in the world these days, with a bed of music that drums up intensity. You might particularly enjoy the ending.
Reminiscent of the Peter Gabriel and Deep Forest contribution to the film "Strange Days", this Ummagma track offers an eclectic earful of modernity meets tradition, complete with Carpathian whistle and balanced out with successive male and female vocals. [more inside]
Somewhat reminiscent of Sonic Youth's cover of the Carpenters' "Superstar", this song still seems to have a unique quality all of its own. When we recorded this Ummagma track, we didn't know about that cover but since then, this has been the feedback received and we also feel a similarity there too. What do you think? I think I managed to write a somewhat upbeat song! Well, upbeat if you ignore the title and lyrics. It's got: hammond organ, celesta, acoustic guitar, bass, drums, and some epic "Woo-oo-oooh" back up vocals.
Tender love song with an intriguing, unusual structure
Navelgazer and I are in a Brooklyn-based indie-rock band called The Olivers. This past weekend, we recorded 7 songs for our new album. This one is called The Marching Glum. Please let us know what you think - we are curious as to how people will like our new material. (previously : 1, 2, 3, 4, 5)
The second recording of my first visit to my school's media center. It's a song idea that I've been toying with for a long, long time. It's in 7/4... if you like that sort of thing.
I forget why Tony Danza was in this song title, but man have you ever seen that guy naked? This is another rockist song from my old band New Blind Nationals. It's got the three guitar attack but with a pulsing disco bass line underneath. I'd like to pretend that Franz Ferdinand stole their best ideas from me while I was sleeping.
This arrangement still needs some embellishment, though I think it works okay as is. Probably one of my better vocal turns.
Mmm, 6/8 time... The vocal's less questionable than the other songs I've posted, but it is quite raspy in places because I ended up doing it in a couple takes after already having spent an hour two whipping the screamy bits of M.A.D. into shape, so my voice was a bit shot.
WE CAN DO THE MUTUALLY-ASSURED DESTRUCTION
A long time ago, this song used to have words. They were super lame. Now it makes for a good guitar freak out. The drums were the first thing I ever made in Ableton Live. Doing the tempo changes at the end in Live was a pain (but I still love you, Live!). I think the drums sound a bit stiff and robotic (in a bad way), but it's still about the best I can do with real drum sounds. The vocal's a bit dodgy, but is Good Enough For Now.
